Catharine ("Eliza") was known as Catharine M. Nelson at the time of hermarriage to Edward Pai ne. Her maiden name is unknown; Nelson was thesurname of her first husband. Note that different records show her nameas Catharine or Catherine.
Information from Jody Hamman, 3448 Ashworth Rd., West Des Moines, IA50265:
Here's what I have on Catherine Elizabeth Nelson:
First of all, She was born in January 1817 in New York State. She was ofIrish descent. T o family and friends she was commonly called "Eliza".
Her maiden name is unknown. I have no documented proof that her maidenname was Nelson. An o ld family heirloom states that her husband was JohnNelson, also from NY, but not necessarily born there. And that they werepioneer farmers of Tompkins Co., NY, She had 2 children with JohnNelson:
Adney R. Nelson: Born August 25th, 1838 Tompkins Co. NY
Addison Bessy Nelson: Born about 1845. Died 1863 while in the Civil War.
(I should mention that we've always just assumed that Addison's last namewas Nelson.)
John Nelson died, date of death, place of death/burial unknown. Thenaccording to my records , Catherine Elizabeth _____ Nelson remarriedEdward Paine/Payne. He too died (October 22, 1879). In 1880,Catherine moved to Wright County, Iowa to live with her son Adney R.Nelson.
Adney Nelson immigrated to Iowa in 1866. Adney and his wife Helen E.Hamilton Nelson came wit h 8 other families. They traveled by ox team andcovered wagon. (My cousin still has the oxen yoke.) They settled atGalt, Wright County, Iowa. Near the end of the first winter the entirebunch had only 10 pounds of corn meal between them, so Adney walked the32 miles to Iowa Falls, IA to purchase more supplies, as he had moneyleft. Soon they homesteaded in Section 24 of Lincoln Township, WrightCounty, IA. This land of 160 acres had a small house and a small sodbarn on it. ( I could probably go on and on with Adney Nelson. Thereis a very old book entitled, "The History of Wright County". There aremany pages devoted to Adney Nelson, and also to his son, whom he alsonamed Addison Nelson.)
Anyway, back to Eliza Payne. The following is Eliza's obit. It was takenfrom the Wright Count y Monitor, Wed., March 27, 1895.
"Mrs. Eliza Payne, at the advanced age of 78 years, died at the home ofher son, A. R. Nelso n last Wednesday morning. The deceased was a nativeof New York but had made her home with her son during the past fifteenyears, the most of which time she was a helpless invalid. Rev. Devitt ofClarion, conducted the services which were held at the house and werelargely attended. The remains were taken to the Clarion cemetery forinterment."
Eliza Payne is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Clarion, Wright Co., IA.Her stone is a large tal l stone. Nearby are other Payne/Paines. Herson, Adney is buried next to her as are many of her Nelsongrandchildren. I have a picture of her, although she is in the distance, she looks to be a somewhat heavy set lady.
This is the info that I have......I live about 2 hours drive from Clarionand Galt.
The home that Eliza lived in still stands and some of her decendants livein the house. I als o have pictures of Adney and Helen Nelson if you areinterested. Adney kind of looked like Abe Lincoln, at least his bearddid.
There is no death certificate available for Eliza. I've searched.
