!This census record presents some problems of interpretation. (1) If
Judith,
age 39, is the same as Julia Carvin, head of household in the 1870
census
showing Samuel Mahey as a household resident, then why is she shown
without
husband or son, Alexander (b. abt 1846).

!(2) Is John, age 35, b. Penna., actually a son of Samuel? How
could Samuel
have

a daughter, Mary, born in Guernsey abt 1815 and also a son born in
PA abt 1815?
The only John, Glass blower, we know is the presumed nephew of
Samuel, the John
who married Cyrene Little and had a son named Charles b. abt 1864.
(3) Who is
William, age 13? Is he an otherwise unrecorded son of Samuel and
Judith. If
son, Judith would have been age 50 when he was born.

!DEATH: Pittsburgh Evening Chronicle, Dec. 12, 1871:

"MAHEY - On Monday evening

11th inst at 8 1/2 o'clock, Samuel Mahey, Esq. in the 89th year of
his age.
Funeral will take place on Wed morn at 10 o'clock from the residence
of his son
in law William Maguire, 156 17th St. Birmingham.

!Note re spelling of surname MAHY-MAHEY used in these records:

The original spelling was MAHY (cf Channel Island records).

This spelling is retained for those persons born in the Channel
Islands, i.e.
through Mary Mahey, the last child of Samuel and Judith known to be
have been
born in the Channel Islands. For Henry William and his younger
sister Eliza,
the spelling, MAHEY, is used inasmuch as these children most
probably were born
in American and are known to have used the MAHEY spelling.

!Pittsburgh City Directory entries:

1826 - Mahie, Samuel, master teazer, S. side Front. St. betw. Grant
& Ross sts.

The map corresponding to this City Directory (Carnegie Library,
Pittsburgh)
records the residence of Samuel Mahe on First St., between the
houses of George
Neakins, carpenter and Martha Moore, shop keeper.

!See: "Will of Claire Aime Fidelle de Rouand" aka Francis Rouand
(Rouand will,
No. 360 of 1844, Book 5, p. 445, Allegheny Co., Pa.) Rouand died in
Pittsburgh
late in December 1843 or before January 6 1844 when his will was
proved by his
executors. In this will Samuel Mahey (or May) is bequeathed the sum
of $250.

A codicil refers to Samuel Mahy and states that the $250 is to be
"in addition
to his normal wages". Rouand was apparently a well-to-do man, for
he left
several thousand dollars to friends, and provided for his grave to be
maintained in perpetuity on the property of one of his friends. A
search of
Pittsburgh city directories may reveal Rouand's business, and shed
light on
Samuel's occupation. (The 1826 City Directory entry states that
Samuel was a
"master teazer" or cloth worker. Whether he pursued this work all
of his life
in.)

!We do not know when Samuel arrived in America.

His name has not been located on a ship's passenger list, nor has a
naturalization record been found. Family tradition, passed down from
generation to generation, says that he emigrated from the Isle of
Guernsey. A
John Mahey, from the Isle of Guernsey, arrived in the Port of
Philadelphia 2
August 1816 with his wife. This John Mahey was quite likely the
father of the
John Mahey, glass blower, who was a known associate of Samuel
Mahey's son,
Henry William Mahey. Both lived in South Pittsburgh, on the same
street, in
the 1850's, and were photographed together (photo in possession of
John A.
Mahey) prior to 1861. No census record has been found for Samuel
Mahey. Tax
schedules and mortality schedules have yet to be searched. He is
buried in
Section 17, Lot 112, Allegheny Cemetery, 4733 Butler Street,
Pittsburgh,
Allegheny County, PA. Cemetery records list his name as "Samuel", not
"Samuiel".

!The following records have been checked for evidence of Samuel, but
his name
appears in none:

!Notes to Deed Records:

! DB-33 This John Mehey may be the brother of Samuel who had
a son named
John Mahey. That latter is known to have been an associate of Henry
William
Mahey in Pittsburgh, and like Henry was a glass blower. His wife
was Cyrene
Little from Vienna, NY. They had a son named Charles. The elder
John Mehey
may be the same who is recorded as landing in Philadelphia with his
wife in
1816 from the Isle of Guernsey.

! DB-187 This is probably the younger John Mahey. The lot
described is
the same as the one sold by Samuel to his son, Henry, in 1853
(DB-105). It is
not clear how Samuel regained title to this property following
Henry's death in
1862.

! DB-355, 356, 357 This indicates that the portion of the
Pitt Twp. lot
purchased by John from Samuel was sold by the Sheriff of Allegheny
County.

! DB-85 This deed, dated 1847, records Samuel's original
purchase of the
Pitt Twp. property.

! DB-105 This records Henry's purchase of the Pitt Twp. lot
from his
father Samuel. [Original deed in the possession of John A. Mahey,
1990.]
