spelled "Syrus,";
1850, Wayne County, Virginia. where name is spelled "Syrus,";
1860
Wayne County, Virginia where name is spelled "Cyrus." 1870, Wayne
County, West
Virginia where name is spelled "Syrus". No wife listed.
Children: Mary,
Jesse, Caroline, Dora, America and ?.
!OCCUPATION: farmer. Apparently a fairly prosperous farmer, for
on the 1860
census his land is valued at $3,000 and personal property at
$2,053.
!DEATH: Wayne County, West Virginia Index Register of Deaths.
Tombstone.
!According to Lambert (Lambert Notes, Marshall University
Library), William
was married twice: 1st to Rebecca Boulton (Bolt), and later to
Leah Tony in
Dec. 1852. There seem to have been more children to the first
marriage than
those included in this record. There seem to have been at least
three
children to the second marriage: Mary, b. 3 Jan 1854; Jesse, b. 4
July 1856;
and Caroline, b. 5 May 1858.
!According to Lambert's notes, "William enlisted at the age of 18
in the War
of 1812. He fought in the Battle of Ft. Meigs (NC ?). Others
say he was with
Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans."
!According to research of Ben Cyrus, William was a private in
Captain Yokem's
Company of Virginia Militia from 13 Oct, 1812 to 10 Apr 1813 at
Point
Pleasant, Virginia (WV). He owned two slaves, Mandy and Rachel.
!An account of the Cyrus family written in 1977 by Paul David
Lambert,
descendant of William Cyrus and Leah Toney, states that William
and his first
wife, Rebeckah [sic] Boulton had ten (10) children. He names
Jethro, John,
James, Levi, Everett, Summers, Jeremiah, Mahalia, Elizabeth and
Melvina. Thus
far, in research conducted by John A. Mahey, compiler of these
records, no
documentation has been found for proving all these children.
!William owned several hundred acres of land on the east side of
White's Creek
on the Big Sandy River.
!William's seven sons by Rebecca went to the Missouri Territory
(Minnesota,
Iowa and Missouri). William is said to have given each son $150
to homestead
in parts of that territory. Daughter, Mahala and her husband
William Sperry
also moved there.
!Cabell County, Virginia Deed Book III mentions William Cyrus in
the following
citations: p. 75, Nov 1819; p. 239, 11 Oct 1820; p. 459, 10 Apr
1822,
indenture
on tract 175a on Mill Creek purchased from James M. Hopkins
through attorney
James T. Watson of New York; p. 461, 12 Apr 1822 (indenture)
William Syrus to
John Laidley probably on Mill Creek property.
!Wayne Co. Deed Book "A", p. 48: 3 Sep 1842, William and Rebecca,
for $200,
sell 135 acres located on Sharp's Branch of Big Sandy River, to
Thomas Hally.
(Both William and Rebecca made their marks.)
!Wayne Co., Deed Book "A", p. 202, April 11, 1844, Indenture between William
Syrus and Rebecca, his wife, and Joshua Syrus. Sold to Joshua Syrus for $1,000,
a tract of land containing 226 acres lying on the Big Sandy just below the
mouth of Mill Creek. (The name is spelled Syrus, Sirus and Sires all in the
same deed.) Recorded 8/12/44 by Hugha Bowen, Clk.
