and Lucretia.
!MARRIAGE: LDS Surname Index, p. 13,414: Warner, Helen-James K.
Holder/W.M/30
Sep 1866/ Pulaski/Cleared/Cleared/Cleared 8616003/38.
!WILL: 13 Feb 1904; proved 21 Feb 1907.
!DIRECT DEED INDEX, Polk County, Arkansas (1883-1924), roll 13.
!Federal Land Records: Sec. 11, T: 1S, R: 32W, 10 Jun 1896, Polk
Co., Arkansas.
This records the homestead James received in 1896.
!The earliest record of this family is found in the 1840 federal
census for
Wayne County, Kentucky, where the name is spelled HOLDER. The
"er" spelling
continues in
all subsequent census records until 1900 when it appears as
HOLDAR for James
King's eldest son, Franklin. (Fed. Census, 1900, Potter
Township, Polk
County, AR). However, the census record for James King Holder in
1900 (Potter
Township, Polk County, AK) uses the "er" spelling. All records
for Franklin
Holder after 1900 use the variant "ar" spelling, except for his
gravestone
inscription (Quay County, NM) which reverts to the original "er"
spelling.
!The Will of James King Holder uses the "er" spelling.
!It is clear that Franklin named all his children using the
variant "ar"
spelling. (NB birth certificate of Birdie Ann Holder; grammar
school
attendance records of Birdie Ann Holder; in possession of John A.
Mahey,
1989).
!James King Holder served in Company I, 5th Rgt.,Kentucky
Cavalry, in the
Union forces during the Civil War. ("Report of the Adjutant
General of
Kentucky," vol devoted to Kentuckians who served with the Union
forces.) He
enrolled 24 Oct 1861 at Jamestown, Russell County, Kentucky and
was mustered
in 5 July 1862 at Shelbyville, Bedford County, TN. Military
records (National
Archives) show that he lost his horse and equipment to Rebels
under Morgan at
Gallatin, TN, 21 August 1862. Prior to that, the Company Muster
Roll of 30 Apr
1862, indicates that he had somehow lost his horse equipment:
"Owes the
Government for 1 set horse equipment. Has promised his own horse
& equipment
from Oct 24, 1861." A casualty report, dated 17 Feb 1884, states
that he was
"wounded R side slight" at University, TN on 4 July, 1863. A
later casualty
report, dated 7 March 1887, states that he was "wounded slight in
side...from
June 24th, 1863 to July 4th, 1863 inclusive." He seems to have
been wounded
subsequently, or taken ill, about January or February, 1864, when
he was sent
to a hospital in Memphis, from which he was released and returned
to duty in
March or April, 1864. He was a company cook, and does not seem to
have risen
above the rank of private.
!James King Holder, born in Wayne County, Kentucky, was a farmer.
His family
appears to have migrated to southern Kentucky via Tennessee from
Virginia. He
was married to Helen Warner of Kentucky in Pulaski County, and
his first four
children were born in Kentucky, probably in Wayne County, between
1867 and
1973. By 1875 the family had moved to Marion County, Iowa, where
the four
younger children were born, the last in 1883. By 1900 the family
was living
in Polk County, Arkansas. The move likely occurred about 1896
when James
received Federal homestead land in Polk Co., Arkansas.
!Helen Warner was of German descent. Lucretia Sellers related
how she visited
the Warner home as a child, and the older people spoke German.
