Individual:
!CENSUS: 1840, Cabell County, Virginia (wife, Elizabeth);
1850, Wayne County, Virginia, p. 467, 222, 235 (wife Elizabeth);
1860, Wayne County, Virginia (wife, Tabitha); 1870, Ceredo
Township, Wayne
County, West Virginia (wife, Tabitha);
1880, Wayne County, West Virginia (wife Tabitha).
!BIRTH: According to Hardesty's "West Virginia", Charles L.
Thacker was born in
1807
in North Carolina and came to what is now Wayne County, West
Virginia "in the
earliest days of its settlement." The year 1807 seems reasonable
when compared
to age on census records. Two census records give his birth
place as Virginia.
Two others list North Carolina. His indenture record (see below)
suggests a
birth date of 1805.
!DEATH: The exact date is not known. It must have been in late
1886 or early
1887 since his estate appraisal is dated 17 Feb 1887.
!OCCUPATION: farmer.
!MARRIAGES: see notes to record of spouse (1). Other marriages
are recorded
in
vital statistics of Wayne County, West Virginia.
!INDENTURE: Patrick County Court, Virginia, Aug 1818, Deed Book
5, p. 80. In
this
document Reuben Thacker indentures his son, Charles age 14, as an
apprentice
to
Frederick Critz for six years, until he is twenty.
!Children: The 1840 Cabell County, Virginia census shows that
Charles had two
sons five years old or less. These would have been Philip b. 1838
and Matthew
b.
1839.
!DEED: Charles purchases from Joseph Thacker and wife 50 acres on
Buffalo
Creek, Wayne County, for $50. 27 May 1844
!DEED: Charles sells to Anthony Plymale 50 acres on Buffalo
Creek for $25.
2 Aug 1850.
!Except as otherwise noted, primary research on this branch of
the Thacker
family has been done by John A. Mahey and Ralph Hayes.
