Text: Elvin reports: I was born on a cattle ranch in Western Nebraska on June 6, 1900. After World War I, my dad sold the ranch and we moved to Arizona to a milder climate. We located in Chino Valley in 1920 and established a headquarters for another ranch. I worked on the ranch in the summer and attended school in the winter. In 1923 I graduated in accounting from Lamson Business College in Phoenix and started working for the Arizona Power Company in 1924 as a warehouseman and purchasing agent. I was married in 1927 to Rivers Copeland who was employed at that time with the Corporation Commission in Phoenix. She was the daughter of the first physician in Wickenburg.
[They were to be married by P. Y. Pendleton of the Central Christian Church in Phoenix, but he forgot about it and they called in Richard E. Day, a Baptist minister to marry them on October 8, 1927. LL]
In 1929 I left the Arizona Power Company and took a job in Phoenix as credit and office manager for Miller Brothers Motors, the state Nash distributors. The automobile business was on the decline during the depression and in 1932 I took a job with the Federal Land Bank in appraising farm and ranch lands in Arizona. In 1935 the Arizona Mining Supply in Prescott went on the market and another man and I took over the business. I operated this as the president and general manager for twenty-six years.
After I retired from the Arizona Mining Supply some other men and I founded the Canyon Savings and Loan where I was Vice President and Director for fourteen years, then Southwest Savings took it over. At the same time that I was with the Savings and Loan, I was president of the Prescott Development Company that developed Jackson Acres Subdivision on Iron Springs Road. I am now retired but still hold the position of president of Prescott Development Company.
My wife Rivers died in 1963. I later married her sister Joyce Boyd, a school teacher at Dexter School. Joyce was a widow with three children 6 to 13 years of age. Her husband had died three years previous and she was teaching and trying to support her family. Joyce died two years ago so I am now alone. I have two sons, two stepsons and one step daughter, eight grand-daughters, three grandsons and two great grandsons. I became a member of the Prescott Kiwanis Club in May 1935 and have been a member 53 years. I always enjoy the Kiwanis luncheons. I have attended two International Conventions and a number of District Conventions. I was president in 1940. I was secretary of the club nine years and assistant secretary another ten years.
[ --Elvin Jackson served as an elder and charter member of the MT. Vernon Church of Christ. He is also an avid gardener.(LL) In his later years, the lady who helped Esther maintain her independent living, Gayle Bailey, kept house for him and assisted in his independent life style. Address 1996: 125 MN MT Vernon, Prescott, AZ 86301]
Illness and infections have plagued later years, especially hospitalization in April 1996. Family planned a special 96th birthday celebration in June but his death occurred too soon..
