Individual:
Quinn was born Antonio Rudolfo Oaxaca Quinn in Chihuahua, Chihuahua,
Mexico. His father, Frank "Francisco" Quinn, was Irish-born and movedto Mexico in order to fight alongside Pancho Villa. His mother,Manuela "Nellie" Oaxaca, was Mexican.[1][2] He was raised in theCatholic religion (for a time wanting to become a priest).[3] Quinngrew up in the Boyle Heights and the Echo Park neighborhoods of LosAngeles, California, attending Hammel St. Elementary School, and thePolytechnic High School and later Belmont High School. He did notgraduate. In the 1990s, Tucson High School in Tucson, Arizona awardedhim a high school diploma.
In his youth, Quinn boxed, then studied art and architecture under Frank Lloyd Wright at the latter's Arizona residence and Wisconsinstudio, Taliesin, and the two men became friends. When Quinn revealedthat he was drawn to acting, Wright encouraged this major change incareer direction. In an interview Quinn said that he told Wright thathe had been offered $700 a week by a studio and didn't know what todo. Wright told him "Take it, you'll never make that much with me."
Quinn's personal life was as volatile and passionate as the characters he played in films.
* 1) The actress Katherine DeMille (Cecil B. DeMille's adopted daughter) (1937–1965), by whom he had four children; they weredivorced in 1965.
* 2) The costume designer Iolanda Quinn (Jolanda Addolori) (1966–1997). The union crumbled in 1993 when Quinn impregnated hissecretary;
* 3) Kathy Benvin (1997–2001) the two had a second child in 1996.
Quinn had three known mistresses and fathered a total of 13 children, among them Alex A. Quinn, Francesco Quinn, Lorenzo, Valentina, andSean Quinn, a New Jersey real estate agent.
Quinn spent his last years in Bristol, Rhode Island. He died aged 86 at Boston, Massachusetts from pneumonia and respiratory failure whilesuffering from terminal throat cancer, shortly after completing hisrole in the film Avenging Angelo (2002). His funeral was held in aBaptist church; late in life, he had joined the Four Squareevangelical Christian community. He is buried in a family plot nearBristol.
