Individual:
Elvin reports: I was born on a cattle ranch in Western Nebraska on
June 6, 1900. After World War I, my dad sold the ranch and we moved toArizona to a milder climate. We located in Chino Valley in 1920 andestablished a headquarters for another ranch. I worked on the ranch inthe summer and attended school in the winter. In 1923 I graduated inaccounting from Lamson Business College in Phoenix and started workingfor the Arizona Power Company in 1924 as a warehouseman and purchasingagent. I was married in 1927 to Rivers Copeland who was employed atthat time with the Corporation Commission in Phoenix. She was thedaughter of the first physician in Wickenburg.
[They were to be married by P. Y. Pendleton of the Central Christian Church in Phoenix, but he forgot about it and they called in RichardE. Day, a Baptist minister to marry them on October 8, 1927. LL]
In 1929 I left the Arizona Power Company and took a job in Phoenix as credit and office manager for Miller Brothers Motors, the stateNash distributors. The automobile business was on the decline duringthe depression and in 1932 I took a job with the Federal Land Bank inappraising farm and ranch lands in Arizona. In 1935 the Arizona MiningSupply in Prescott went on the market and another man and I took overthe business. I operated this as the president and general manager fortwenty-six years.
After I retired from the Arizona Mining Supply some other men and I founded the Canyon Savings and Loan where I was Vice President andDirector for fourteen years, then Southwest Savings took it over. Atthe same time that I was with the Savings and Loan, I was president ofthe Prescott Development Company that developed Jackson AcresSubdivision on Iron Springs Road. I am now retired but still hold theposition of president of Prescott Development Company.
My wife Rivers died in 1963. I later married her sister Joyce Boyd, a school teacher at Dexter School. Joyce was a widow with threechildren 6 to 13 years of age. Her husband had died three yearsprevious and she was teaching and trying to support her family. Joycedied two years ago so I am now alone. I have two sons, two stepsonsand one step daughter, eight grand-daughters, three grandsons and twogreat grandsons. I became a member of the Prescott Kiwanis Club in May1935 and have been a member 53 years. I always enjoy the Kiwanisluncheons. I have attended two International Conventions and a numberof District Conventions. I was president in 1940. I was secretary ofthe club nine years and assistant secretary another ten years.
