Individual:
REFN: 1024i
Amanda Lawson Pritchard, is said to have a American Indian ancestr y.
However, no evidence of this has been documented, despite the fact that
she and many other descendants have the high cheek bones associated with
Ame rican Indians. one researcher, Claris Clayton Pritchard, notes: Uncle
Giles oldest daughter, Anna informs me that her father told her his
mother was par t Indian, Tuckahoe tribe in Virginia.
he believed that this came through "Rebe cca Russaw," wife of Theopolus
Lawson. this belief, nevertheless, is unfounde d. Furthermore, the
Virginia state library in Richmond reports that no such tribe existed in
Virginia. Instead, "Tuckahoe"was a derided for each word us ed to
describe the settlers who moved westward over the mountains and lived
between the fall line and blue Ridge (hillbillies, and modern reference).
It is more likely that Rebecca Russaw came from the Roussau (Rousseau)
family. Possible connections are William Roussau, who's Will was signed
in Frederick County, Virginia July 19, 1792 and John Roussaw of Hampshire
County who leas ed 400 acres on New Creek to Cornelius Ward on Dec. 8,
1780.
This John Rouss aw (or his son) may be the one who was a Fairfax County
surveyor prior to the Revolution.
