ITHAMAR SPENCER,Who Took Journal Since 1840, Dead at 89.[from The Albany Evening Journal, Tuesday, Mar 1, 1921, withPhoto, captioned"Ithamar Spencer, who died at ripe old age."]Was a Native of Otsego County and Came of Revolutionary Stock.Ithamar Spencer, 89, a subscriber to the Evening Journal since1840 and one of this newspaper's oldest readers, died yesterdayat the home of his son-in-law, Harmon S. Patten, Albany andShaker Road. He had been an invalid for the last two years. Hewas born in Maryland, Otsego county, April 27, 1832, the son ofCaptain Ithamar Spencer [sic - s.b. Philip A. Spencer; CaptSpencer was his grGF, b. ca 1733] and Jane Worden Spencer.. Hecame of Revolutionary stock of English and Scottish descent.Mr. Spencer moved with his parents to Albany when he was eightyears old [1840]. They lived on Central Avenue and his fatherconducted a grocery store between the years of 1838 and 1866.The son, who was one of three children, learned the trade ofmeat cutter in the old Center markets at South Pearl and Beaverstreets, near where the city building is now located. Later, heoperned a market of his own which was known as the NationalGarden Market. Later still he conducted the Spencer market at 2Central avenue for about 50 years.Had Nine Chldren.He married Miss Julia Ann Kirchner, daughter of Nathan Kirchner,in 1860. They had nine children, the following eight of whom areliving: John I. Spencer, of this city; Mrs. Harmon S. Patten,Mrs. Frank M. Evory, Mrs. Thomas L. Blackburn, Mrs. WalterEmerick, Mrs. Louis E. Heinmiller and Mrs. William C. Nicoll,all of Albany, and Mrs. Amelia Talmadge of Yonkers. Mr.Spencer's father was at one time supervisor of the old ninthward (now the 10th ward).The funeral will take place to-morrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clockat the home of Mr. Patten and will be private. Dr. J. V.Moldonhawer, pastor of Westminister Presbyterian church willofficiate. Burial will be in the Rural cemetery [Albany RuralCem, Menands, NY]. The bearers will be the son, John I.
