He was one ofeleven children. His paternal grandfather, John Jackson, at theage of 30, arrived to Boston from London, England on October 8,1635 on the ship "Defence" mastered by Edward Bostock. Hisgrandfather was an innholder in Cambridge, MA between 1672 and1695. Giles practiced law and was a solider, serving during theAmerican Revelutionary War. He was a member of the firstContinental Congress, that convened first at Stockbridge, MA,and then at Watertown, MA in 1774. As a major of the firstBerkshire County regiment of the Massachusetts militia, heserved at the battle of Bunker Hill, June 17, 1775, and hisregiment was the first to enter Boston after the evacuation bythe British, March 17, 1776. He also served at White Palins,October 28, 1776, as chief of staff to General Gates at thebattle of Saratoga, October 16, 1777, and was at Monmouth, June28, 1778, where he received a commendation for his brave stand.He also engrossed the articles of Burgoyne's surrender. Hearrived at Yorktown the day after the surrender.Giles was married first in 1754 to Anna Thomas of Farmington,CT, by whom he had 15 children, and secondly, in 1781 to SarahAtwood Orton, the widow of Dr. Thomas Orton, who already had 5children and 1 step-child. By Sarah, Giles had 5 more children,making 26 children and step-children living under one roof atthe same time.According to vital records, Tyringham, MA Death records to theyear 1850, Giles Jackson, Esq. died May 4, 1810, at the age of77 years.
