Individual:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Cadogan%2C_1st_Earl_CadoganWilliam Cadogan, 1st Earl Cadogan (1672 - 1726) was a notedmilitary officer in the army of John Churchill, 1st Duke ofMarlborough during the War of the Spanish Succession. Hecommanded the prestigious Grenadier Guards for some time. The eldest son of barrister Henry Cadogan, he was educated atWestminster School and Trinity College, Dublin, and joined thearmy in 1690. In 1694 he became a Colonel and rose to the rankof Lieutenant-General by 1709. He was appointed quartermastergeneral to Marlborough in 1702. He fought at the Battle ofBlenheim (1704), the Battle of Ramillies (1706), the Battle ofOudenarde (1708) and the Battle of Malplaquet (1709). His armycareer ended with Marlborough's; he retired from the army afterthe latter's dismissal in 1711. He then intrigued for theaccession of the House of Hanover, by force if necessary, uponthe death of Queen Anne. When the Hanoverian King George Isucceeded in 1714, Cadogan received military favours from theCrown and in 1716 he put down a Jacobite rising. On 21 June 1716 he was made Baron Cadogan of Reading, havingrecently purchased Caversham Park, Oxfordshire (now Berkshire)near that town. He was also made a Knight of the Thistle and,the following year, a member of the Privy Council. (He was aWhig MP for Woodstock from 1705 to 1716.) On 8 May 1718 George Imade him 1st Baron Cadogan of Oakley (Buckinghamshire), ViscountCaversham (Oxfordshire) and Earl Cadogan (Denbighshire). Inlater years he also served as Master of the Robes (1714-1726),Governor of the Isle of Wight (1715-1726) and Master-General ofthe Ordnance (1722-1725). However, the Opposition's staunchhostility towards him meant that he had lost any politicalinfluence several years before his death on 17 July 1726.He married Margaret Cecilia Munter, by whom he had twodaughters: Sarah, who married Charles Lennox, 2nd Duke ofRichmond, and Margaret, who married Charles John Bentinck, fourth son of William Bentinck, 1st Earl of Portland.
