She wasreceived at 'Cascoe Bay, ye 17 January, 1698-9, aboard theProvince Galley,' and returned home to her surviving children." *Rix : Her first husband, Jonathan Fairbanks, was killied byIndians in a raid on Lancaster, Mass. Mary "was captured in theraid, taken to Canada, and held until 1698, when she wasredeemed by the Government, when on Jan. 17, 1698-9, she wasreceived on board the 'Province Gally', and returned to her twosurviving children, when in a year from the next January she m.David Whitcomb." While she "was in Canada, she learned from theIndians to doctor with roots and herbs, and practiced the art aslong as she lived." *Lancaster Records : She was captured during King William's War,in 1697. "On Sept 11 a party of the enemy came upon the town ofLancaster then prepared for mischief by a wonderful security,and they did no little mischief unto it. Near twenty were killedand among the rest Mr John Whiting the Pastor of the Churchthere. Five were carried captives, two or three houses wereburnt and several old people in them. Capt. Brown with fifty menpersued them till the night stopped the pursuit, but it seems astrange dog or two unknown to the company did by their barkingalarum the enemy to rise in the night, and strip and scalp anEnglish captive woman and fly so far into the woods that aftertwo days bootless labour our men returned." - p.136 : "Casco Bay, ye 17 January 1698/9. Mary Ffarbankes of Lancaster Mary Glasser of Lancaster" [note: two more captives were returned to Albany, NY] *Whitcomb Family : She "was descended from Resolve White whocame on the Mayflower." *Jaffrey Families: "a descendant of Resolved White, theMayflower passenger." Note: although several Mary Haywards are listed in "MayflowerFamilies", I have not been able to make a link to this Mary orher parents. There is a Mary Haward, also b. Dec 5, 1671,[p.105]who was a daughter of Anna White [daughter of Resolve] and JohnHayward, but she is listed as being married to John Willard[p.120] [note: there is some doubt given here] Children were:
