Time Line for
BENEDICT HAMMOCK

1740 4 AprBenedict born to Robert Hammock and Ann Lambert, who already had a a son about fourteen years old named, William, , born 10 Sept 1726, a 10 year old , John, born 3 Aug 1730, 8 year old, Hugh, born 30 Oct 1832, a 3 year old, Robert, born 17 Oct 1737. Younger siblings include: a brother, Lambert, born 16 Sept 1744, a sister, Mary, born 10 Nov 1746, a brother, Lewis, born 17 Jun 1749, and a sister, Milly, born 11 JaN 1757.. (No record of the marriage exists in the Parish for Robert and Ann. They probably married sometime in late 1725 to early 1726, since their first child was born in Sept 1726. Were Ann at least 16 years old - and she may have been slightly younger-she bore the last daughter when she was in her mid forties - which would not be considered uncommon for that time in history.
1758-1773 Span of years in which five sons and one daughter were born to Benedict & his wife. There could have been others. The couple would probably have been of childbearing age for a few more years.

1775 13 Jan"Benedict Hammock of NC , (abt. 35 years old) with a wife, 5 sons & 1 daughter from 17 to 2 years old, entered 200 acres on south side of Little River opposite William Bentley.
1778 20 Sept"To Benedict Hammock for Three Grass Stear as p. Col. Few Certificate - 30 pds."
1783 17 FebFirst effective land Act allowed a man to take up 200 acres upon his own head-right, free of any charge except office fees for survey and grant, plus an additional 50 acres upon the head of each member of his family at sales prices ranging from one to four shillings per acre. Limit 1000 acres. Also, rights of persons who had previously received warrants of survey were ratified, and declared entitled to grants occupied by them.
According to Act of Feb 25 1784, passed primarily to create and open up Franklin Washington counties fixed price at 3 shillings per acre. Bounty grants could be located in these two counties.
1783 6 OctNathaniel Marshall Martin of Wilkes Co. 600 acres on Little River and Small branch, adjoining John McCormack, Wm. Bentley, Beadict Hammock and vacant land. [Rec'd:Washington County Deed Book A 1779-1785, no. 160, p.52].
1784 5 JanBenedict Hammock appeared before a land court in Wilkes County, GA and entered 3 headrights, acquired by him by purchase. Appearing at the same court were: 3 other Hammocks-Robert Hammock, who entered one headright (his own), another entry by Robert Hammock (his own), and William Hammock (his own). Known associates of the Hammocks in Wilkes County who were also present at the time, and made entries were: Christian Bentley, who entered her own headright, John Combs, who entered his own and 4 more, Phillip Combs, his own and others, and Robert Leveritt, his own and others.
1784 17 MayBenedick Hammock. Bounty for 2871/2 acres oak, pine, and hickory land, adjoining Lick Creek and vacant land. District 5, Warrant 191, executed 1 Jul 1784. Sharing the property line on the west of this tract was Joel Bowen.

1785 Tax Return For males ages 21-60, living within the county, owning real estate in any county within the state. Land having been surveyed was subjected to tax, whether or not grant had been obtained.
Benedict Hammock is enumerated in Captian Willson's District (I), rendering 2871/2 acres in Washington County, and 250 in Wilkes County, plus 2 slaves. Also listed in this district are: Robert Hammock (200 acres in Wilkes Co.), William Hammock, Sr. (400 acres in Wilkes Co., plus 6 slaves), William Hammock, Jr., (200 acres in Wilkes Co.), William Bentley, William and Henry Liverett, Benjamin Catchings, and Phillip Combs. The only other HAMMOCKS enumerated as being a taxable within the county is John Hammock, who renders 1100 acres in Captain Walker's District (G). Enumerated, also, in this district are the Bentleys-John, Balaam, and William, and Travis McKinney. Capt. Walker's District and Captian Willson's are contiguous. Later, in 1896, Captain Walker's District is located in Lincoln County, just inside the western county line between Lincoln and Wilkes.
1786 2 FebBenedict granted 200 acres, on branch of Rocky Creek. [Recorded Book HHH, p. 942].
1786 6 NovDate of Bond. Robert Hammock, adm. estate of Benedic Hammock, Robert Leverett, security. Amt. 300 pds. Inventory: 142 pds, 4 sh, 6 p.
1786. Tax Digest. Benedict's name does not appear for this year. The only HAMMOCKS listed are: William, in Capt. Wilson's [I] District, with 700 acres and 6 slaves, John, in Walker's District [G], with 1300 acres, and Robert, in Capt. Alexander's District, [HH]with 558 acres and 1 slave. All the acreages rendered are located in Wilkes County. The District in which Robert is enumerated lies south of the Little River, in the area that later (in 1825) became Taliaaferro County.

Enumerated in Captain Heard's District [MM] is one Daniel Hemmeck, poll only, a Robert Hamek, with 287 acres in Franklin County, and John Hameck, with 300 acres in Wikes. Using the 1790 map by Hudson, it appears that Heard's District, lay just south of Little River near the junction of Kettle Creek. District HH is farther south, just west of the Ogeechee River.
The Robert Hamek, who rendered 287 acres in Franklin County was no doubt rendering a Revolutionary War Bounty Land grant in the amount of 2871/2 acres.
It should be noted that John's acreage has increased from 1100 acres to 1300, William's from 400 to 700 acres. William, Jr.'s name does not appear. Perhaps he has moved out of the county, or William, Sr. is paying the tax on the 200 acres rendered by him last year. No defaulters are listed for this district.
It should also be noted that John's 2871/2 acre Revolutionary War Bounty grant in Washington County sold during the year to Francis Willis. Willis, however, does not gain title to the land until after 1791.
According to the Wilkes County deed records, John and wife Phoebe, sold 200 acres of his land that lay on Fishing creek to William Paschal. Recorded Book AA, p. 29.
1787 31 JulBenedick Hammock, dec'd, Inventory. Left to his son, Benedict, slave Sary, feather bed, etc., to dau Betsy, slave, Daffy, cotton wheel, cow, etc. Geo. Gresham, Wm. Huckaby, Solomon Thornton, apprs.
1788 No extant tax register.
1789No extant tax register. Only the names of some defaulters survive. There are no Hammocks among those published.
1790 8 MarDeed. John, Sr. bought 250 acres in Washington Co. near the Oconee River. [Recorded Book HH, p. 292

1790Not all schedules are extant schedules. Many names are missing from those that were located.. Only the Hammocks enumerated are in Capt. Richard Fretwell's District [HH]. They are: Robert, with 550 acres and 1 slave, Lewis and Robert, Jr., polls only. The following are listed as defaulters from District I (Capt. David Chriswell's District): Benedict (estate), John, Sr., and Robert.
1791 5 NovDeed: Judeth Hendricks, adm. of Benja. Hendricks, dec'd to Abner Webster, 100 acres on branch of Rocky Creek, part of 200 acres granted to bEnidick Hammock 2 Feb 1786.

1791Robert paid the taxes due on Benedict's estate. and on 100 acres in Capt. McKinney's District. William, Jr, and Sr., and also John, Jr. and Sr., are listed in Capt. McKinney's District [G]. William, Sr. renders 450 acres and 6 slaves for himself, and John renders 770 acres. The names of John, Jr. and William, Jr. appear together on the list, but apart from either of the Seniors. They are assessed only for polls. Robert again renders Ben'k's 4 slaves, and 100 acres for himself, in Capt. Price's District [I], and John rendered 250 acres situated in Greene County. Greene County adjoined Wilkes County on the west. Robert and Lewis were assessed polls only in Capt. Collier's District [II]. Robert Hammock, Jr. paid his poll in Capt. Simmon's District [HH], and Robert [Sr.].rendered 558 acres for himself. Advertised in the Augusta Chronicle as defaulters in Capt. Simmon;s district were Lewis and Joshua Hammack.

Thomas Hammock appears for the first time on the Wilkes County rolls. He is taxed on 100 acres of 2nd class land and 223 acres of 3rd class land in Franklin County.
1792 24 Jan Deed: John sold 170 acres adjoining Paschall, Hammock and Thos. Leverett to Robert Tucker.

1792Benedict's tax on 4 slaves was paid by Robert, who also rendered 100 acres on Rocky Creek. John rendered 200 acres on Rocky Creek and 1 slave. They were enumerated in Capt. Price's District [I]. William, Sr. paid taxes on 450 acres and 7 slaves; John on 1130 acres on Little River and 250 acres in Greene County. These two were enumerated in Capt. McKinney's District [G], that ultimately became a part of Lincoln County. Other Hammocks who paid taxes in Wilkes County were: Thomas, on Beaver Dam Creek, [M] Robert, Sr., 550 acres on Hardin's Creek, Mary Ann, 300 acres, and Robert, Jr. , Lewis, and Joshua., who were only assessed poll tax. [HH]

1793Robert continues to pay the taxes for the estate of Benedict, that now consists of 3 slaves.
1794Benedict's estate taxes paid by Robert.

1795Benjamin is listed as paying the taxes for Benedict's estate - 3 slaves. This is the final year in which Benedict's name appears in the Wilkes County tax lists..
