Individual:
A story told to his son-in-law Sam Lane some years ago. Clarence said that at about the age of 15 he was living with his grandmother Rachel and felt that he was being given all the bad chores by his uncles and grandmother so he left home and started hitch-hiking across the United States from Illinois to California. He worked his was by doing odd jobs and chores for farmers and people along the way. After a few months in California he returned to Illinois and shortly after that joined the army.
