BIOGRAPHY: Daniel, his wife Elizabeth and son Smallwood (and others?) emigrated to Ohio when Smallwood was seven years old (approximately 1818).Source: The His tory of Brown County Ohio (1883), page 220).
"During 1826, Daniel NEWBERRY, wh o purchased a farm on New Harmony &Williamsburg road, on which he built a cabin , and commenced toexercise his strength and ingenuity by making less forest int hevicinity of his new home. He labored on his farm during the summer,and in the winter season was employed in going from house to housemaking shoes for the di fferent families in the neighborhood. Hecontinued to perform the duties- devolv ing upon him until the year1851, when he died from the effects of a stroke ofpa ralysis at theage of eighty-five. Smallwood, son of Daniel Newberry, is stillli vingon the old home place, and, although seventy-one years of age, he isstill e ngaged in tilling the soil." New Harmony Cemetery contained originally one acre, deeded in 1845 tothe Protestant Church, and one-half acre was added in 1866. Thiscontinuedin the possession of the church until 1880, when it wasdeeded to the Trusteesof th e township, who purchased two acres more,making three and one-half acres.The fi rst who was laid to rest herewas a small child of James Wells, in 1832.
