First off I would like to say hello to everyone, since this is the first time I have ever responded to anything on this site. I am a descendant of John Shelby and Nancy Sheckles through their daughter Nancy Elizabeth who married Caleb Jones. Nancy and Caleb's daughter , Florence, was my great grandmother. She often told her children that her mother was related to Isaac Shelby first Gov. of Kentucky. When I first started looking for my Shelby line this was all I had to go on so I did some looking into this family because for a while I thought I would find my line until I found out that my line was out of Samuel. In 1781 Sullivan Co TN was still part of North Carolina so the children of John Shelby mentioned above I believe would have been born in North Carolina not Tennessee.
John son of John Shelby born 1723 and first wife Louisa Looney had John who married Elizabeth Brigham. He and Elizabeth had Alfred Moore Shelby, Louisa, and I believe Clark.
David son of John Shelby and second wife Sarah Davis was the father to Dr. John Shelby born May 24,1785 in what became Sumner Co TN. Dr. John was the first white child born in that county. Dr. John studied medicine in Philadelphia and married Anna Maria Minnick of Philadelphia.Dr. John and Anna had to daughters Ann and Pricilla.Dr. John died May 15 1859 and is buried in City Cemetery Nashville TN.
Dr. John also had a brother named Anthony Bledsoe Shelby 1798-1851 who was Justice of the supreme court of the Republic of Texas. All of this information comes from a book I found in the library at Nashville it sites sources so if any would be interested in the sources I would be happy to share them.

Of the nine known children of Evan and Catherine, it appears that the only two that ever lived in the Sullivan Co/ Washington Co, VA area was Evan and John. Col. Evan Shelby’s family is pretty well documented. So what do we have on John’s descendants? According to Judith Trolinger’s Shelby Exchange, what is known about John is: John was born before 1723 in Tregaron, Cardiganshire, Wales, died abt 1809 in Sullivan Co. TN.
1st wife name unknown.
Children from 1st marriage:
John b abt 1746 in PA/MD; died abt 1806 in Sullivan Co, TN
Isaac b abt 1757 in TN; died before 1812 in TN. Wife: Eleanor? 10 children,
Thomas b abt 1758 MD, one son, Henry.
2nd wife Sarah Davis married about 1754
Children:
Catherine b abt 1760 PA/MD, d abt 1820 Sullivan Co., TN
David b about 1763 PA died 1822, wife Sarah Bledsoe, one son, Orville b 1803.
Sarah born after 1764 in TN, died about 1806 prob in Sullivan Co., TN.
Look at where these children are listed as being born. Did John and family move between these states or is this an error? Does any one have any additional information on these folks?
