From the Introduction to Volume One:
"For all matters relating to the general history of the early days of th
e Town and Colony of New Haven, the reader is referred to Atwater's admirable History of the Colony of New Haven (second edition, Meriden, 1902). New Haven was settled in 1638, and was named in 1640. The original town was much larger than at present. Wallingford was set off in 1670; Branford in 1685; Woodbridge in 1784; East Haven in 1785; Hamden in 1786; North Haven in 1786; and Orange in 1822. Naturally the vital records of these towns, formed wholly or in part from the old Town of New Haven, will be found in the New Haven records up to the time of their separate incorporation."
