Notes
Individual:
[2004Haycock.FTW]

John was the last child born to Ralph and Martha. He also was born in Buck's Harbour on 31 Mar 1777, although some family records show Eastport, Maine. John probably grew up in Boston, Mass. Since his father moved there in 1782 but in 1794 at the age of 16 he appointed to John Cooper of Machias, Me., his guardian. What possessed John to go to the New Brunswick area is unknown but perhaps since his brother Ralph lived near there he perhaps joined him. Like his brother Ralph, John also married the same year and in the same place. He married the 29 Jul 1799 in Machias, Maine to Frances Scott. John is mentioned as a house carpenter in Beddington and Machias, Me.

Frances was the daughter of John Scott and Fanny Thompson from Scarboro, Maine, now living in Machias. She was born in Machias, Maine about 1780 and had 5 brothers and sisters. Frances died about 1818 after giving birth to at least 5 children.

John remarried a widow, Mrs. Elizabeth Hanson Turner on the 19th day of March 1819. She was the widow of Mark Turner and had 9 children from this marriage. I have not been able to establish who the parents of Elizabeth Hanson were. The Hanson family were a very large and established family in the St. Patrick's, N.B. area and much work has been done on their lineage. There is strong evidence that Elizabeth born 2 Feb 1777, is the daughter of John Hanson and Elizabeth Deliverence Clark, one of eleven children. In any case John inherited a very large family when he married Elizabeth to supplement his own. After John died in 1840 Elizabeth moved with her children to Pickering, Ont., then on to Oxford County with her son Abraham and is where she died in 1855.

Few records can be found on John Haycock. However there are several references to John Haycock in the Charlotte County, New Brunswick land records. Here we find John as a grantee (receiver of a grant) from a William Hanson for the sum of 50 pounds, Lot #4 in Block 4 on the eastern side of the Magaguadavic River, 400 acres to John Haycock, John Scott Sr, (Frances' father), a John Scott Jr., (Frances' brother)- see record B-652 on 27 Feb 1801. All three men were of Machias, Me. In book O-273, John Scott Sr to John Haycock for 16 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence, one third of Block 4 ( both of St George, N.B. Book O-274, John Scott Jr. To John Haycock for 16 pounds, 13 shillings 4 pence, his third share of Block 4. Then in Book O-275 John Haycock to Daniel McMaster for 30 pounds half of the 400 acres Block 4 in Sep 1806. Also John was listed as a grantor ( giver of grants) to a William Hanson, David McMasham, Dominicus Milliken and John Ingram. These were in the St. Patrick, and St. George Parishes, located on the south coast of New Brunswick and not far from Milltown where Ralph lived. These indicate that John lived a lot of his life in and around this area. He is also listed as a witness in the estate settlement of Charles Carr in 1822 and also as a witness to the marriage of his step son Jacob Turner to Martha Hanson in 1830. In April 1834, Joseph Turner deeded to his mother, Elizabeth Haycock, part of Lot #13 in the Penobscot grants and she was living in St Patrick at this time.

Except for family records we can find no official recording of John's children yet. Family records show at least five children from his two marriages. John died 20 Nov 1840, at the age of 63, supposedly in St. Patrick's New Brunswick but there also lies a possibility that it may have been St. John, New Brunswick as new evidence shows his last child, Elizabeth was born there in 1823. His final resting place is unknown. It is however almost certain that John was the first Canadian of this family though some of his children did return to the U.S. while others headed for Ontario.
