Andrew Baird was born in Eastwood, Ontario on July 3, 1866 to David Baird and Janet Christie from Scotland. He was the second son and the brother of William, Margaret, Robert and John Baird. Andrew grew up on the Eastwood homestead with his siblings but at the age of 10 he was left without a father. His mother, Janet, had to raise all five children by herself. About 1893 Andrew and his older younger brother Robert headed out west to British Columbia to earn money to help support the family. They worked on the railway for a while during the construction phase of Rogers Pass but eventually ended up working as cowboys on the O'Keefe Ranch in Vernon, B.C. According to pay records, Andrew worked there from 1893 to 1895 when he returned to Eastwood, Ont. Robert carried on working there til May 1899. The story is told that Andrew was Cornelius O'Keefe's "money man" during his many business trips. Andrew would carry the cash Mr. O'Keefe thought he would need and Andrew was responsible for its safekeeping during their trips. This was a task he did not enjoy but was part of his job.
With all his brothers out west, Andrew was left to run the homestead by himself. He married Mary Richardson, daughter of John J. Richardson and Mary Douglas, on Dec 29, 1896 in Eastwood. There they had four children, David (b.1898), Jenevera (b. 1902), and twins Douglas and Elsie (b. 1907). Shortly after the twins were born they contracted whooping cough and died at the age of 3 months. The records show that Andrew was active in the Eastwood School and Church. His brothers would try to make it home every five years or so but they never returned to Eastwood to stay. Andrew was often heard saying how much he would like to visit the west again. That opportunity never came. Andrew raised his family and supported his mother until her death in 1928.
All of Andrew Baird's brothers lived in the west and he would see them every few years when one or two of them would visit the old homestead. Andrew kept the farm running and left it for his son David to carry on with. Andrew always wanted to move out west to join his brothers but the opportunity never arose and he never did get back.
