Individual:
I am going to show her ancestry, but frankly I don't believe it. The story of her father's s
ervice in the Revolution rings true, as does his death at Cowpens. But the claim that he was the son of a Scottish laird is implausible, at best. Among other things, the son of a lord would not likely live in the backwoods of SC, and certainly would not accept the rank of Private (!) in the army. IF the story is true, Nancy is a cousin of Alexander Hamilton.
Nancy is described as having an unhappy childhood because her parents died young. She was mos tly raised by a slave "mammy". Nancy had a keen mind and was a good conversationalist and reader.
