Around the year 1923, John had his first stroke. They had just finished eating their lunch. He wanted another cup of coffee. He got up to get it and as Sarah was pouring it for him, he had a stroke. It wasn't long afterward that he had a second stroke which left him paralized on the right side of his body. His speech was gone. He slowly learned to talk so Sarah could understand him most of the time. He was bedfast the last four years of his life.
John had a third stroke on the morning of Nov. 21, 1927. He died that afternoon and was buried without any funeral services. His son, Eli, would not let any preacher other than a Missionary Baptist hold the services and none were available.John C. Waldroop and Sarah Jones were married at the home of her adopted parents, Rufus and Samira Russell by Justice of the Peace, James Heukle. (marriage took place in Excelsior, Ark.)
