Individual:
In 1851 James & Susannah left the Pittsburg area and settled in Burlington, Iowa. This move had to do with the railroad boom in America. The family settled two blocks from the Mississippi River (131 South Main Street-Lot 123) This property stayed in the family until nearly 1900. James Jr. paid taxes & upkeep) The family is listed in the 1856 Iowa Census at the home in Burlington. James was in some sort of shipping business on the rairoad line. There are several court papers in relationship to that business. Joseph, the oldest son died in 1854 at age 21. In the McElhaney plot at "Aspen Grove" cemetery in Burlington, his marker still stands. Mother Susannah died four years later on August 20, 1858 at age 54. The City Directory of burlington 1859 lists James as "cabinet maker" at 131 South Main. In the year 1863, Isabell "Bell" died at age 22. The family belonged to the Presbyterian Church.(Old Zion) The fouth marker at Aspen Grove reads James McElhaney died September 12, 1866, age 64,2 mo & 28 days. So with the passing of these four members, that leaves two daughters & three sons.
