"How 'Kelly's Landing" Came By The Name" by Wm. T. Turman
West of Sullivan is the east edge of Turman Township, is a neighborhood that
is known as "Kelly's Landing". One of the great grandchildren of the early
settler, now a barber in Sullivan, told me how the region came by that name:
He said: "In the early days the folks in that vicinity floated logs down
the small creek to a sawmill further west, where there was more water.
This would be in the spring when rains would flood the creeks. One time
the logs got jammed, near the Kelly place, and couldn't be moved. And so a
sawmill was brought in and a dam was built, so as to float the logs to a
'landing' place up to the saw. Thus the place was soon known as 'Kelly's
Landing'."
