"PUBLIC RECORDS OF Connecticut" - "Cost allowed by this assembly to AbielCheney... of Pomfret in the county of Windhan vs Joseph Talman of NewLondon..., for attendance and C. to answer a petition preferred by himthe said Talmon and withdrawn, is 2 pounds, 3s, 6d lawful money"5/29/1755 He learned the trade of blacksmith, probably under hisguardian, Daniel Holbrook. He worked some time in Boston; then removedto Pomfret, Connecticut After the death of his brother Thomas in 1714 he joinedWilliam in a sale to Jonathan Draper of some land near Dedham linewhich Thomas had bequeathed to them. feb. 8, 1716-17, he sold to hisbrother, William Cheney of Roxbury, carpenter, for 300 (pounds), hisshare in a dwelling house and other buildings and 30 acres of land inRoxbury; one half of five acres and a half of fresh meadow in Roxbury,"being half of eleven acres in copartnership with Thomas, William, andAbiel Cheney," and half of eleven acres of salt marsh in similarcopartnership; also "all his rights in Woodstock." Hailing fromBoston, he purchased of Samuel Waldo, for 130 (pounds). a messuage anda tract of land in Pomfret and land adjoining the line of Woodstock,Nov. 13, 1716. he purchased another tract of Anthony and WilliamStoddard, 9 Nov. 1719. His brother William, of Roxbury, bought 30acres of land in Pomfret from his step-father, Josiah Sabin for 300(pounds), and presented it to his namesake, Abiel's son, William. Hesold Abiel all his property in that vicinity in 1746. Abiel residedsouth of the Mashamoquet, on land bought of Maj. Fitch, east ofNewichewanna Brook. He was chosen a town officer in 1724; was one ofthe founders of the "United English Library for the Propagation ofChristain and Useful Knowledge" in Pomfret, 25 Sept.1739, to which hissubscription was "Abiel Cheney, blacksmith, ten pounds."
