[allard3.ftw] William came with Commissioners from London,who were sent out by the Proprietors to purchase land from Indians. He settled first at Burlington,N.J., but soon moved to 500 acres called Chichester in PA. Under the government of William Penn, William Clayton was a member of the Provincial Council and presided at the first council meeting. He was a member of the council when the Great Charter of Philadelphia was formed, and was one of the first two judgess of Philadelphia. He was acting Governor of Pennsylvania in 1684-85. William left a will naming his wife. Prudence, and children Prudence, Honour, William & Mary. He was a responsible man of property.
