| Blanche Strebeigh |
Blanche Strebeigh was a petite woman - about 5' 4'', described as "slim soigne", who I don't think ever weighed more than 110 pounds. She was very reserved towards those she didn't know very well, though a scotch or vodka could loosen her up. After one got to know her they would enjoy her sense of humor and having her around. She was a very attractive woman and there were many men in her life. There were also many dogs -- she had many pets over the years and was very involved in the Animal Rescue League in her Palm Beach years. From a letter dated March 23, 1926 by Blanche to her stepmother, Grace Strebeigh, on her engagement to Julian Sloan. "Dearest Grace, I'm so happy - I'm living on air. I probably won't get very far on this letter as I'm waiting for Julie to go and have a cocktail with many friends. I can't think what all to tell you. Will you tell Pa that if his memory serves him right he will find that Julie's uncle, Sam Sloan, was a classmate of his at Columbia. Has father gotten my letter yet ? I wish you could see all the flowers that have arrived. Oh dear, I've been so excited - I got a little diamond guard the other day and the engagement ring's coming later. Somebody in the Racquet Club told Julie that he and pa would probably get tight together. Also, today, the marker in the Racquet Club congratulated him and said he used to play tennis with father years ago in the Racquet Club. I got a face towel from my future sister-in-law today & it seemed so funny. She used to know us in Quogue. Mrs. Henderson is Julie's mother's first cousin and Uncle Frank's sister - Isn't that funny? I took mother up to meet his mother yesterday & it was quite funny, but they got along pretty well -- The Sloans are awfully nice to me. Bill Boyle is one of Julie's best friends, so Julie sent him a cable the other day - did Bill tell you? Julie has some awful nice friends & he's extremely popular & terribly funny. I know you'll be crazy about him - we generally like the same types. We're planning to be married about the 25th of May in St. Bartholomew's chapel, which holds about 200 people & mother says it's not big enough but I think it is if we just have family & very few others - Oh, I'm so excited I can't think. He's sincere & straight & honest & you can't ask for much more! Excuse the writing but I don't have much time to write. This picture of us is dreadful & I almost didn't want to send it but I tho't I might as well - Did I ever send the snapshot on the beach? - Excuse me if I have sent it once but I don't know whether I sent it to you or Barbara. The excitement is intense & I haven't slept for days. I do wish you were here to enjoy it with me. Julie & I have been calling on Cynthia & Bruce this afternoon who are on their way to Baltimore. Uncle Dick also came in. Met Aunt ?oe on the street this morning & she seemed pleased. Can't write any more. Am crazy to see you and hear from you & you must let me know when you are coming back. I want to tell you that I have never felt so well or hopeful & I just love the whole world today - Best Love, Blanche | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
