Individual:
James Shelton volunteered when he was 18 years old along with his brother, Edward Franklin, at Surry Co., NC on 5 Jun 1861. He entered the army as a Sergeant but lost that position and became a private in Nov 1861 with Co. I, 21st NC Regiment. He was taken prisoner by the enemy on 3 May 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville, VA. He was a POW at the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC, Fort Delaware, DE and City Point, VA, where he arrived for exchange 23 May 1863.
