HISTORY
He changed his name from Backhouse to Backus. His third child was christened as Backhous e so we don't know when the change was made. His middle name was from his mother's maiden name. When he was six years old he came to America with his family, on the "Manchester".
He married a darling Danish girl, Charlotte Flora Nathalia Petersen Madsen, in the Templ e of his God three days before his 22nd birthday. James was a farmer. He purchased a small farm at Battle Creek, now Pleasant Grove, Utah, which was covered with sage brush that had to be cleared before it could be farmed. The sagebrush was piled to be used for firewood in the fireplace and in the small kitchen stove. The family lived in a two room log cabin.
James was away part of the time to get money enough for food for the family. In those da ys very little cash was given for labor, the custom being to exchange work with neighbors. There was never the proper tools to work with, so the farm never produced a very good crop. With the father away so much of the time, the family spent a lot of time idle. The children never attended school much because it was three miles to walk over lonely roads. James Williams died 4 months before his last son was born and left his wife with seven small children to raise.
