As told by Lula Adams Backus
"Temperance May was born in Provo, Utah in a little home on West Main Street. When she wa s still a baby her parents moved to Provo Bench, where they could take up a tract of land and build themselves a home. Here they pulled sagebrush, hauled rocks until they had cleared the ground. Mother said it took them ten years to clear forty acres. They built their first home under the hill which was close to water. Then when they could, they built one up on the hill which gave them a beautiful view of the country around.
Mother had to go barefoot from earlier spring until snow came in the fall. She herded cow s and many a time would stub her toes and go hopping along trying to keep up with the cows.
She was a wonderful manager. No matter how little she had she always made the best of it , then, when she married a man that came from a hard working family, she knew that with faith and work they could make it and raise a family no matter what came. And she did. Her home was always spotless even after having twelve children, doing housework, washing on the board, carrying water, milking cows, making butter, tending chickens, and helping on the farm. She never lost the desire to keep her home so she was never ashamed to have someone come in for a visit.
Another thing I remember so well was when a hobo came to the door for food, she would alwa ys set a table and bring him in and feed him. She said to never turn anyone away hungry. Its the same as turning your back on God. She never worked in the Church until her family was raised, as Dad was away from home a lot and the work and responsiblity fell upon her, and left her very little time to spend anywhere but home. When she could, she was active in Relief Society, being second counselor for six years with Emma Stratton as president and Aunt Clara Loveless as first counselor. She spent hours in the evening knitting, crocheting, and making quilts. She and my father were on the Old Folks committee for many years.
In Jan of 1941 she went with Dad to California on a six months mission, which they both en joyed very much."

Autobiography of Temperance May Evans Adams

My father, Joseph Evans was born December 2, 1848 in Dudley, England married my mother, Tempe rance Penrod, who was born September 19, 1852, in Provo, Utah. They
Were married in Salt Lake Temple on January 27, 1873. After they were married they resided i n Provo for about six years, and while there, three children came into their home. The eldest was a son, which they christened Joseph. I was the next occupant of the crib, and was given the name of Temperance May. My birthday was May 23, 1875. The next child, a sister called Elisabeth Daisy. While she was still small we moved out to Provo Bench where Pa bought a quarter section of land. This land was located east of the Lincoln High School …down Lincoln Street above and under the hill. Here my parents built a one-room cabin in which we lived for about ten years. It wasn't very elaborate, but we had love and God in our home, and that's all that really counts. While living here three more sons came into the family, the first, Hyrum, the second caught pneumonia and died, but a few years later another son was born and christened Earl Richard.

By this time I was twelve years of age, I had received all the schooling that was to be mine . I attended school where the Spencer Elementary School is now, my first teacher was Phoebe Patten. I liked school and hungered to learn more about the ways of the world, and get an education, but in that time money wasn't very easily had, and if a person didn't have the two dollars a month tuition to pay he didn't get any school. Things were not nearly so complicated then as of today, and most of the children not having much money went to school barefooted, I among them. By the time I had reached the 4th Grade my schooling was finished. From this time on I started to work out to get a penny here and a nickel there. Because I was a girl, the type of work I did was housework, washing and ironing and things pertaining to this nature. I remember of washing on the board all day for fifty cents a day. Daisy, my sister, and I would get up early in the morning…trudge up to the place where we were to wash and then wash all day and walk home again that night. Our earnings were fifty cents for the days work. The first time I worked out I worked for Emma Stratton, my cousin. My work consisted of housework, washing, ironing, hoeing weeds and other things. After this I wasn't home much, because so many people were claiming my time.

As time passed I became interested in a home of my own. The man whom I was destined to marr y was George J. Adams. We had been raised together, but before this time I had not thought of him as anything more than a friend. I clearly remember the first night we went together, it was to a dance in Provo at Grave's Hall. After this we were together practically all the time and finally married June 7, 1894 in my old home. Bishop Peter M. Wentz married us. After we were married, we bought ten acres over on Curtis Street on Provo Bench and built a little adobe home. At first we had quite a time to make a go of it. George worked for a dollar a day, and I got out and picked fruit, but new were very happy. A year passed and our lives were gladdened by the arrival of a baby daughter, which we christened Temperance Viola, but within four months a black cloud come over our happiness when Viola caught pneumonia and died. This tragedy struck us so hard that we moved to a lumber house up above the town hall and never entered our little home again.

By the next April we had bought five acres down on Fourth South where we built a two roomed b rick home. We moved into our new house in the last of October, and a week later a baby son was born to us whom we named George Glen. Another year passed and we had another son, Joseph. Then a daughter arrived whom we named Martha Maude, at this same time my mother had a son whom she named Boyd. Next we had another son, Eldon Hyrum. The next son we named William Dee. Then our family received another daughter…for a while there it seemed that it was going to be mostly all boys, this daughter we named Lula May,. The next child, a son we named Harold, the next son we called John Evans. Two years passed and another son was born to us, which we christened Ronald B. By this time I thought that I had all the family that was to be mine, but was surprised when three years later I had another daughter, which we called Daisy Alene. This truly was to be all the children I was to have…so, I set about to raise my family of ten, which would have been twelve if God had permitted it so.

Because our family was so large we had to add four rooms onto our home. After our family go t a little older, we went to the Temple and received our endowments. During all this I had been privileged with several responsibilities in the church. They were as follows: I was councilor in the Relief Society for six years, Councilor in the M.I.A. for several years, Secretary of the Sunday School for several years, and a Relief Society Visiting Teacher for forty years. One of the high lights of my life was when I accompanied my husband on a mission to California.

Time has passed, and my children have all married well and have families of their own. At th e present I have 57 living grandchildren and 61 great grand children. My husband passed away September 22, 1949, which day happened to be his mother's birthday. At the present I have been living at my home occupied with my hobby, which is fine needle work.

Note: Temperance May Evans was called home August 31, 1954 and so ends her school of life, a t last she has graduated from this world into another where she might be with her husband and continue to progress.
