Text: Samuel served as a 1st Lt in Co D, 40th WI Vol Inf in the Civil War.
[SW WI & Old Crawford Co Bio's, Chicago: Clarke Publ Co, 1932, R977.3 G45]
One of the distinguished pioneers of Dane Co, was Samuel Henry Sabin of the
town of Windsor, whose daughter Miss Ellen C Sabin, was for many years the head
of Milwaukee-Downer College and made it one of the notable schools of the
country. His parents had removed to OH fr VT. Samuel came to WI in 1848
settling at Sun Prairie. Here he met his future wife, who had come from NY with
her mother and a brother-in-law, George M Buell. In the spring of 1850 he
joined the gold rush to CA. He was absent three years, returning by way of the
Isthmus of Panama and NY. He settled on a farm in the town of Windsor. Later the
family removed to SD, where the youngest son, James Henry Sabin, now has a
large ranch. Of the eleven children of Sam & Adelia, Miss Ellen Clara Sabin is
the eldest and Mrs Kate Lucinda Sabin Stevens is the youngest. These two
sisters now make their home together at Nakoma, Madison Co. Sam was an
enterprising, scientific and successful farmer of Windsor. He was an unusually
well-read man, interested in public affairs and faithful to civic obligations.
He served as chairman of the town in 1857-58, again 20 years later in 1877-78
and again in 1883-84.
