Natural relationship to Polk, Robert (Bruce?)
Natural relationship to Tasker, Magdalen
NOTES BY BILL POLK, KANSAS CITY, MO.:
The following information (down to ______) was taken from "Polk Family and Kinsmen," 1912, Wi lliam Harrison Polk, and Emma Angellotti's "The Polks of North Carolina and Tennessee," 1923- 1924:
William was a young lad when his family landed at Damn Quarter (later softened to Dame's Quar ter) on the Eastern shore of Maryland about 1672. He grew up on the family plantation, the la nds called "Polk's Lott" and "Polk's Folly" in Somerset county. When his mother Magdalen die d, William being the eldest living son, under the then existing law of primogeniture, inherit ed the family home called "White Hall." William made "White Hall" his home, living there unt il his death. "White Hall" was a noted colonial mansion with large orchards of various fruit s and a distillery. Generous hospitality was practiced by William and his family at the mans ion.
William secured no patents to any land until thirty-eight years after his father
patented his (Robert Polk's) land and forty years after his brother John's
patents. Why he deferred the matter so long is not known. It is certain that
he purchased one or more tracts from others who had secured patents for same. The patents o f land for William Polk totaled 500 acres. The patents were: "Moneen," 100 acres, E. side M ain Branch Nanticoke River in John's Neck, Somerset Co., 10 July, 1725; "Donigall," 100 acres , E. side Main Branch
Nanticoke River, Somerset Co., 10 July, 1725; "Romas," 100 acres, E. side Main Branch Nantico ke River, in John's Neck, 10 Sep., 1725; "Richmond," 200 acres, Southermost side Main Branc h Nanticoke River, Somerset Co., 6 March, 1728. In addition, in partnership with his brother -in-law, Thomas Pollitt, William also patented "Come by Chance," 20 acres, "two miles from he ad of Wicomico Creek," 4 Dec., 1735.
William did not mention his two older sons, William and Charles, in his will.
They likely received from their father what he estimated would be their fair
share of his property, and then went out on their own, William to the Allegheny
frontier of Pennsylvania around what is now Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and Charles settled on th e Maryland frontier, at the North Bend of the Potomac, in Frederick County, MD.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------ ------------------------------------
The will of William Polk, on file in Somerset Co., MD., is dated 23 Jan.,
1739/40 and was probated 24 Feb., 1739/40. The will reads as follows (the
spelling, punctuation and capitalization is exactly as shown in the will):

- Title: A Genealogical Tree of The Polk Family, 1849
Text: "William Polk grandson of Robert wife Priscilla Roberts." It was later proven that this William of the 1849 tree, son of John Polk, son of Robert Bruce Polk, was not the right William who was the pro
genitor of the Southern Polks. The correct William was the son of John's brother, William (Sr.) who had a son named William (who married Margaret Taylor), who should have been shown as the progenitor of the Southern Polks.
- Note: A Genealogical Tree of The Polk Family, 1849. This tree is incorrect in that it shows John Polk, son of Robert Bruce Polk, as the progenitor of the southern branch of the Polk Family. Research aft
e r the publication of the 1849 tree revealed the proper line from Robert Bruce for the southern branch was through his son William, and then William's son William, who married Margaret Taylor. There i s another Polk tree being sold by the James K. Polk Memorial Association of Columbia, TN. which shows the southern Polks (the descendants of William Polk and Margaret Taylor) as being of Robert Bruc e Polk, then John Polk, then William Polk. The text about origination of this tree is printed on the face of the tree and is: "The original drawing was partially updated in 1966 in respect to the fa mily of Governor E. Louis Lowe (the "Fearless Lowe" of James R. Randall's lyrics of Maryland My Maryland) and his wife Esther Winder Polk Lowe. This copy was made for James G. Stahlman of Nashvill e for presentation to the Polk Memorial Association, June 1967." And there is still another Polk tree, this one an updated version of the 1849 tree, which shows the southern Polk line as coming fro m Robert Polk of Maryland, through his son William, and through his son William who married Margaret Taylor. The bottom of this Polk tree (which is sold by the James K. Polk Memorial Association, als o) states: "Revised and reproduced from a tracing of an original which was published in 1849 -- by the Polk Genealogical Committe ---Nashville, Tenn. in 1952." Copies of all these trees are in the p ossession of Bill Polk of Kansas City, MO.
