John Hay, 2nd Earl of Tweeddale (1626-97), was a member of the
PrivyCouncil of Scotland, 1660-73, and Lord Chancellor of
Scotland,1692-96. He became the 1st Marquess of Tweeddale in
1694. Hay marriedLady Jean Scott (1628/9-1688), daughter of the
1st Earl of Buccleuch,in 1644, by whom he had seven sons and two
daughters. His eldest son,John Hay, Lord Yester (1645-1713),
succeeded as 2nd Marquess ofTweeddale. The correspondence
includes letters from two other sons,probably Lord David Hay
(1656-1726) and Lord Alexander Hay(1663-1737).
