Notes
Individual:
B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., b. 5 Mar 1759, in PA (probably
Rockland Twp, Berks Co.), d. 7 Jul 1854, buried Union Lutheran Ch.,age 95.

It is believed that B1- Bastian, Jr., was loaned to or hired out to a family moving to NC in a wagon train when he was age about14. Either that or he ran away from home and followed a wagon train toNC to be with friends or possibly to keep close to a girl friend. Thecircumstances are left to our imagination. He probably married youngto a daughter of the family who befriended him and became, accordingto family legend, the "head of a household at age 18." It probablywas one of the other men listed as helping to start the Organ churchin 1774 who befriended the young boy age abourt 14. No children havebeen found who could belong to this first marriage.

He appears to have been in Rowan Co., NC, in 1774 when he helped begin the construction of the Organ Church.

He was the first Lentz to enter for land in NC. On 4 Aug 1778, he entered for 191 acres of land in Rowan Co. (Raleigh, Bk. 75, p.272, and Rowan Bk 18, p. 170.) On 8 Sep 1778, he entered for 296acres joining his land and to "include the improvements where he nowlives" (Raleigh Bk. 51, p. 116, and Rowan, Bk 9, p. 442.) Theseentries fit the legend that he was "the head of a household at age18." It is believed that B1- Bastian, Jr., built a house on landthat he thought belonged to him, married, and entered for 191 acresonly to have explained to him that he did not own the land where hehad built. He immediately entered the claim for the land around him,and both pieces of land were issued to him.

He was married 4 times, according to LENTZ HERITAGE, but it appears to be 5, judging by "Rowan Marriages, 1753-1868," p. 237:LENTZ Bostian & Sophie Frietly, 14 Mar 1797; Frederick MILLER,bondsman, Jno Rogers, wit.

See the B- Bastian Lentz, Sr., entries in the FIRST GENERATION for details on B1-'s arrival in NC, first land grants, his helping tostart the construction of the stone building for the Organ Church, hismarrying his FIRST wife at his age of 18 and being a head ofhousehold. The name of this FIRST wife is unknown.

B1- Bastion Lentz, (Jr.,) shows on the 1790 census, Salisbury Dist., Rowan Co., NC, as "Lance, Bostion, Jr.," with 2 free whitefemales, including head of family (meaning his wife). The extrafemale must have been for a daughter. Rev. Storch reported on 5 Dec1790 that he buried a child of Bastian Lentz (Jr.). B1-'s nextliving child is shown as born after 1790.

He married SECOND to Elizabeth Siversen (or Sivers) on 28 Nov 1788. (The -en on the name may have been added to indicate that shewas a widow, as was a German custom. She may have been Elizabeth_________ Sivers, with her former, maiden name being a family namethat was probably quite well known in the area. Some have suggestedthat Sivers may have been a corruption or error in writing "Sifford."This marriage was recorded by Rev. Storch, and he paid the preacher 12shillings paper money. They had ten children between 1788 and 1816.Bastian, Jr., would have been age 57 when the last child was born. Theage of his wife is unknown, but, assuming she had become a widow andrushed into a second marriage at age 20, she would be age 48 with thelast child. No detailed record of the family was found, but it wasreconstructed through long research by Mrs. Plyler, aided by others. The records and family are in the realm of the possible.

According to LENTZ HERITAGE, his THIRD marriage as to Mary Houldhouser on 20 May 1824. However, LENTZ HERITAGE apparently didnot find the record indicating that his THIRD marriage probably was toSophie Frietly on 14 Mar 1797, Frederick Miller, bondsman, Jno.Rogers, witness (see "Marriages of Rowan Co., NC, 1753-1868,"compiled by Brent H. Holcomb, published by Genealogical PublishingCo., Inc., Baltimore, 1986, p. 237. Hereinafter refered to as MORC.).No known issue.

(The 1800 census shows "Bostian Lance, Jun.," This is NOT B1- Bastian, Jr., but J13- Bastian Levi Lentz, son of J1- Peter Lentz, andgrandson of J- John Lentz, Sr.)

The 1800 census shows B1- Bastian, Jr., shows with 3 boys under age 10 and 1 girl under 10, he and his wife show in the age 26-45bracket. This fits his known family.

This would make his FOURTH marriage to Mary Houldhouser on 20 May 1824; Michael Hoffman, Jno. Giles, witness (MORC, p. 237). LHstates that she may have been a widow lady since she died beforeBastian, but that the Holshouser historians have her listed as veryyoung compared to Bastian. No issue.

The 1810 census, Rowan Co., NC, page 067, shows him and his wife, over age 45; 2 sons ages 10-16; 2 sons ages 16-26, and 2daughters under age 10. The oldest daughter was not at home and thefamily shows an additional son(?). These(?) could be living with theirmaternal grandmother, as often happened. If the mother was age 45+ in1810 as shown, she would be age 51 in 1816 when he last son was born. This make the last son be in some doubt at least. He must have diedearly as he does not show on the 1820 census. Or there is a lot herethat is not known.

The 1820 census shows 2 sons age 16-26; Bastian over 45, 1 female under 10 and the other females are not clear enough to readaccurately. MAYBE 1 gir 16-26, 1 girl 26-45, and mother over 45. Allof this could fit into this family with ease.

The 1830 census shows Bastian as age 60-70, wife, 40-50, alone.

The 1840 census shows Bastian age 70-80, wife age 50-60, with 1 female under age 5, and 8 slaves. This may ahve been a granddaughterunder age 5 staying with the older folks for company,

The same Rowan records show that his FIFTH marriage was to Catherine Peeler, 29 Mar 1845, David Clutts, bondsman, Jno. H. Hardie,Jr., witness. After Bastian, Jr.,'s death, the court ordered that men"lay off a year's provisions" for the widow. These men reported thatthey surveryed the farm and gave her the provisions. She shows on the1860 census of Rowan Co. as Catherine Lentz, age 50, with Nancy Kenappas housekeeper, age 25, and Roland Miller, age 24, day laborer. Shedid not show up in the 1870 census.

The 1850 census shows Bastian Lentz, age 90, wife Catherine, age 40, and Nancy, age 22. This is B144- Nancy, a granddaughter.

B-Bastian Jr. died in 1854, buried Union Luth. Church, with headstone.

The WILL of B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., (Rowan Bk. K, p. 171) made on 14 Jan 1851, is in too much detail for our use. He gives his wifeCatherine the house, 10 acres, garden, crib, barns, stables, springand pasture. This was followed by cows, hogs, sheet, fire wood andhousehold items without number almost, furniture, horse named Bail, and "one Negro girl named Caroline about 15 or 17 years old." All ofit to remain hers as long as he lives and "remains my widow and nolonger," but the remains to be shared among my heirs after a sale. Then he lists the following:

ITEM: I give daughter Catherine, wife of Henry Powlas, what I have already given her and $5.00.
ITEM: I give son Peter what I have already given him and $5.00.
ITEM: After paying my debts and funeral expenses, the rest to be sold and equally divided among my other three children: (1) Myson Henry, (2) my son Abraham, and (3) my daughter Elizabeth File, wife of Michael File, except the property I heretofore named.
ITEM: I give my son Abram Lentz my Negro girl Nancy, and all her increase hereafter. I give my son Abram one Negro boy namedClark, and also I give to my son Abram this tract of land where I nowlive by complying with the above mentioned conditions to my wife, whenshe changes her name or dies it is to belong to Abram.
Lastly, I appoint Abram Lentz by Executor. Witnesses: Willie Bean, Buckner Crowell. Signed-- Bostian (X) Lentz.

The slave census was not found (did he look for it? Doesn't say.) (NOTE: Regarding the Negro boy named Clark, I believe this maybe identical with the following from Marriages of Rowan Co, NC,1753-1868, p. 237: "Lentz, Clark & Hannah Barringer (colored) 27 Oct1865; married 28 Oct 1865 by H. Barringer, J. P." My guess is thatthis was a case of two freed slaves marrying, one of whom had beenowned by the Lentz family and one of whom had been owned by neighborsnamed Barringer.

From the Will, we get children: (1) Catherine, (2) Peter, (3) Henry, (4) Abraham, and (5) Elizabeth File, wife of Michael File--theonly 5 children named. We have tried to include the records left byWatts, Poole collection, Mrs. McCubbins's notes, and names furnishedby others to come up with ten children for B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr.Some may be in doubt. If we add those under age 10 on each censusrecord, we get the following:
1790 - 1 girl; 1800 - 3 boys and 1 girl; 1810 - 2 girls; 1820 1 girl;
for a total of 8 children. Then add the son born in 1816 for a total of 9 children.
We cannot account for the tenth child by the census. Children who were born after
one census and who died before the next census will not show. This may be the
problem here.

Was the "Nancy" on the 1850 census with Bastian and wife Catherine the same as "Nancy" the Negro girl willed to Abram Lentz?Apparently not, since son B14 - Abraham Lentz had a daughter Nancyborn in 1828. This Nancy fits the census records. It appears thatB14- Abram and family were the helpers to B1- Bastian in his old age.

B1- Bastian Lentz, Jr., sold some of his land to several of his children, probably at a bargain. Note the following:

CASE NO. 1: On 29 Sep 1828, Boston Lentz sells his son Abraham Lentz, for $800, land on Dutch Second Creek joining thelands of Keslor, Kimball, Klutts, Melchor, Eller, BostonLentz, and Hartman, containing 191 acres. Witnessed byJohn Hartman and John Eller who may have had connections to the familythrough sons-in-law. (Rowan Bk 39, p. 479.)
CASE NO. 2: On 1 Jan 1819, Boston Lents sells to his son Henry Lents, for $560, land on north-west side of DutchSecond Creek, joining Hartman, Bowers, and Basinger, containing 152acres. Witnessed by (sons) Peter Lentz and Joseph Lentz, signed asBoston Lentz. This may have been signed by an "X" also. (Rowan Bk32, p. 363.
CASE NO. 3: Bostian Lentz sells Henry Powlas (son-in-law) for $500, land on Dutch Buffalo Creek, joiningRimmer, Boston Lentz, Yost, and Winzel, containing 191 acres. Also, 3 acres in Cabarrus Co. joining William Sifford and JohnEddleman, Witnesses: (Son)Abraham Lentz and Hg. Giles.
Signed: Bostian X Lentz. (Bk 33, p. 62,)
CASE NO. 4: This case is speculation. He may have used some of the money from these sales of land to give other children aninheritance in cash so they could move to new land in Illinoisor elsewhere.

With son Joseph Lentz as a witness to deed, we have the following
children listed and accounted for:
(1) Unnamed daughter on the 1790 census.
(2) Catherine Powlas
(3) Henry
(4) Abraham
(6) Jospeh as a witness to a deed.
(7) Elizabeth File
(8) Peter
Those not accounted for are:
(5) Dewalt
(9) Sophia
(10) We have Charles very much in doubt despite the listing of him in the Organ Church records. He was born when hismother was at least age 51 and probably older. IF he was a true son ofthe wife of B1-Bastian Lentz, Jr. It has been speculated that theboy baptised by Bastian Lentz on the Organ Church records as Charles, born 15 Jun 1816, sponsored by Henry Powlas (B1-'s son-in-law whomarried Catherine) may have been confused with the first child of B14-Abraham Lentz and his first wife___________Poole, who is believed tohave died in childbirth, with the child shown as B141- Charles Lentz,b. 29 Jul 1815 from the IL records. In other words, it is possiblethat B1- took this motherless grandchild and had him baptised with thebirthdate getting mixed with the date of baptism and being sponsoredby the child's uncle by marriage. This would leave B1- Bastian, Jr.,without a son Charles, born in 1816 or 1817.

This Charles Lentz does not show on the 1820 census wih Bastian Lentz, Jr., which would indicate that he died between 1816 and1820. The other "speculation" is possible--that is, that the childshows with the family of Abraham Lentz on the 1830 census as age10-15. He went to IL before the 1840 census, and does not show in NC

Members of this family line should look for information along this line. He does not show with Abraham Lentz on the 1820 censusbecause Abraham was in the process of marrying his second wife andneeded time to adjust. The boy is believed to be with the Pool familyat this time or with some of Abraham's brothers or sisters. He iswith the family of Henry Powlas in 1820, and with the family of hisfather Abrham Lentz on the 1830 census. Henry Powlas shows 2 boys in1820 and only one this age in 1839, with Abraham showing one in 1830.Powlas kept Charles until Abraham married again..Rev. Rothrock Diary: "Sat, Jul 8 1854--Attended to the funeral of

Bostian Lentz, dec'd. at Union Church, preached from Rev. 2:10." The 1790 Census shows:

LANCE, Bostion, Jr.
1 free white male of 16 years of age or over (This would have been himself.)
2 free white females. (This would have been his wife and a baby daughter, probably the one
that died in infancy..

Marriage:
Marriage date was recorded by Rev. STORCH, and he paid the preacher 12

shillings in paper money. Lentz Heritage, Chap IV, p. 14 cites Rev. Storch: "He married
SECOND to Elizabeth Siversen on 28 Nov 1788, recorded by Rev. Storch, and he paid the preacher 12 shillings in paper money. Notice the "en"on the end of her surname which may indicate the she was a widow sincethe Germans added "en" to the end of surnames to show a married woman.Bondsman, Michael Hoffman; Jno Giles, wit.
