Sarah's paternity is unknown. Her father was the hired man on her mother's farm. She has always listed herself as Sarah Stephenson and her marriage record in Calhoun County lists her father as James Stephenson. (However, this cannot be true as James death date is well documented as August 9, 1838 and Sarah's birth date as April 29, 1841.)
Sarah did not know the secret of her parentage until her half siblings inherited from the Stephenson estate and she was excluded. She was mortified when she found out the truth.
