DEATH: Death: The Sumner Gazzette Friday October 21, 1881
Mrs. Julia Ann Carroll, 86 years of age died at the home of her daughter, Mrs.
George Wescott, last Saturday October 15. Funeral sevices were held at the
Presbyterian church Tuesday, Rev. Zimmerman officiated. Ten of her eleven
children were present at the funeral.
General: In 1865, after fifty years in Pennsylvania James wife, Julianna Keppler Carroll
and all her children except Peter, having sold out, left Pennsylvania,
responding to the old urge to better their conditions, but still sticking
together. They landed in February of 1865 in Grant County Wisconsin, doing
stone cutting along the way. The Plattville Normal School at Plattville,
Wisconsin was done by them and also the stone pillars for the first railroad
bridge across the Mississippi river at Dubuque, Iowa.
Ten years later, 1875, they moved again. William and George moved to Franklin
County, Iowa near Hampton, Iowa. James M. moved to Clear Lake, Iowa.
Ferdinand, with the Wescotts and the Wellmans settled in Bremer County near
Sumner, Iowa.
