Leonard graduated from eighth grade of P.S. 100 in Malcolm at age 12.
Leonard's first year in high school was in Lincoln at the old McKinley High school in 1918. His sophomore year was in the new Lincoln High School building. He graduated from high school in 1922 on or before his 16th birthday.
1923: he went to California with some friends in a Model T. They had to back over some of the Rocky mountains. He later sent his dad a telegram: "Need $75 by tomorrow or my name is mud." Selden thinks his father sent the money. Shortly thereafter, Leonard came back.
Leonard went to the U. of Nebr. for one year or less, with a view of becoming a pharmacist.
In 1927, Leonard's father, Frank, asked Leonard to come to Malcolm to help operate the grain elevators and lumber yard that Frank had just re-purchased. Leonard and Kathryn moved to Malcolm at that time. Leonard put his mathematical expertise to good use in 1933 in estimating grain bin capacities for the CCC agricultural loan program.
In 1935, he built the brick house north of the Community Hall. He was a leader in building the Hall.
He played second base on the Malcolm town team for many years. In 1941, the team won the Blue Valley championship. Leonard and his brother, Selden, played against the Harlem Globe Trotters basketball team in the Community Hall in the 1930s. Ticket receipts did not cover the small guarantee given the Globe Trotters.
Leonard and family moved to Lincoln in 1940 for six months and again in 1941 permanently, initially to run the Davey Cash Coal Co., 1750 R St. He went to Wichita, 1942-3, to work for Boeing. He resumed working at the grain co. in Malcolm and Woodlawn while continuing to reside in Lincoln. Leonard took over sole control of the Davey Grain Co. when his father retired, c. 1951. He had been a grain broker in Lincoln for a few years prior to 1951.
Leonard was an expert pool player, winning the Lincoln city tournament in the 1920s. He continued to play competitive pool in his later years, winning at least 6 Elks Club trophies, 1961-4. He also was an ardent card player: bridge, poker, pitch.
Leonard was attending the Nebraska-Colorado football game in Boulder when he was stricken with a fatal heart attack. Issued NE bef 1951 The 18 June 1928 "Malcolm Messenger" reported that Mrs. Frank Davey, of Lincoln, was visiting in Malcolm Friday, at the home of her son, Leonard. "Mr. Leonard Davey has moved into the Shafer residence which has been vacant since Mr. Shafer moved to Lincoln." 27 Nov 1929: "Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Davey motored to Manhattan, Kansas Saturday to attend the football game between the Kansas Aggies and Nebraska. "Hugo Mueller, Herman Westfall, Leonard Davey, and Lester Thompson motored to York Sunday afternoon." 12 Nov 1930: "A number of 'town kids' played basketball Tuesday afternoon in a rough and tumble manner with the high school boys. They succeeded in running up a score of 39 to the high school boys' score of 60 [I wonder if this was not a typo for 20 or 30 for the high school; 60 was almost unheard of in the days of center jump after each basket]. Leonard Davey proved to be the star player for the town, caging a basket by "going into reverse". The town men participating were James Allen, Eric Plautz, Leonard Davey, Carl Willman, Martin Osterman, and Lester Thompson. The high school boys enjoyed the game immensely and hope these men will play again." 5 Nov 1930: "The boys in Manual Training have erected a basketball goal in Mr. Davey's lumberyard. This enables them to practice in the evenings and we all appreciate it." "Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Davey are the proud parents of a fine baby boy born February 13." "Leonard Davey has transferred his radio battery business to Allen Bros." 19 March 1930: "Malcolm boys are organizing a baseball team. At the meeting which they held Sunday, they elected Leonard Davey, manager, and Eddie Krueger, secretary-treasurer." 4 April 1930: "Malcolm baseball team has had fine practice games. Lineup so far: Edward Krueger ss, Leonard Davey 2b, Joe Martin 1b, Elmer Beckman lf, Ervin Brauer cf, Andrew Hanson rf, Willis Dewey c, Harry Johnson and Rudy Beckman, pitchers. 16 April 1930: "Many of the Malcolm rooters saw the Malcolm baseball team beat Ruby 28 to 6. Malcolm had no competition but a few Ford horns which squawked for Ruby. Malcolm got 25 hits and 28 runs, of which 4 were home runs. Ervin Brauer got 2 while Leonard Davey and Rudy Beckman each got 1." 4 May 1930: Malcolm was def. by Seward College, 21-6. Beaver Crossing beat Malcolm, 6-0. 11 June 1930: Malcolm def. by Tamara. 16 July 1930: Malcolm beat Seward 6-5, at Seward. 30 July 1930: Malcolm beat Staplehurst, 3-1. 6 Aug 1930: Malcolm trimmed Raymond, 8-4. 20 Aug 1930: Malcolm played their last league game at Milford on Sunday with the Ruby team. 11-2, Malcolm. We heard that they have a game with a Negro team on the Malcolm diamond. 3 Sep 1930: Altho Malcolm baseball team did not have all their regular lineup Sunday, they were victorious over Garland, 11-5. 10 Sep 1930: Malcolm def. Raymond, 3-0, the 8th straight win for Malcolm. 17 Sep 1930: Malcolm beat Elk Slough there, 13-7. 24 Sep 1930: Malcolm won its 10th straight game, beating VFW of Lincoln. This makes 14 wins and 6 losses. 15 April 1931: "The Malcolm Baseball Club has again come to life and have organized for the coming season. We hear that they pland to again join the Blue Valley League. On April 22, they will have an ice cream social in Malcolm." 6 May 1931: Malcolm ball team beat Raymond there, 7-3. First league game. 1 June 1931: Malcolm lost to Tamora, 3-0, due to errors by some Malcolm players. 10 June 1931: Malcolm beat Garland, 6-1. 17 June 1931: Malcolm played scoreless tie with Garland, rain halting the game at the end of the 5th inning. Malcolm now leads the Blue Valley League: Malcolm, 3-1 .750 Ulysses, 5-2 .714 Tamora, 3-3 .500 Seward, 2-2 .500 Staplehurst 2-2 .500 Raymond 2-3 .400 Garland 0-4 .000 24 June 1931: Malcolm beat Tamora, 5-1. 8 July 1931: Malcolm beat an insurance team from Lincoln (Woodmen Accident?), 11-10. 29 July 1931: Malcolm beat Seward, 12-3. 19 Aug 1931: Garland beat Malcolm, 3-2, at Malcolm. 2 Sep 1931: Malcolm baseball team lost Sunday's game to Staplelhurst by a one score margin. Leonard and Selden Davey and Willis Dewey were the "Babe Ruth" of the Malcolm team. However, Leonard's homer didn't count because "Mr. Umps" saud he didn't leave his footprints on the third base bag.
