Obituary WILBUR S. HAWKINS FUNERAL RITES Funeral of Wilbur S. Hawkins Held at Wesley Chapel, Friday Afternoon of Last Week.---Rev. F. W. Stoll Delivered Funeral Discourse.--- Burial Was At Albin Cemetery. As announced in the Independent, last issue, the funeral rites of Wilbur S. Hawkins, who passed away at his home, southwest of Newman, very suddenly on July 16, were held at Wesley Chapel, on Friday, July 18. There was a large concourse of relatives and friends present to pay their last respects to the deceased. The services were conducted by Rev. F. W. Stoll, of Windsor, assisted by Rev.B. M. Petty, of Newman. Rev. Stol delivered a very fine memorial address to his departed friend, and told of the friendship which existed between Mr. Hawkins and himself. He had visited the deceased only a day or two before his death, and at the time Mr. Hawkins had asked him to deliver his funeral sermon, stating that he didn’t believe he was long for this world. Mr. Hawkins hadn’t been feeling well for many weeks, but his sudden death’was indeed a severe shock to his family and friends. Music for the funeral service was furnished by a quartette composed of Mr. Charles L. Reed, Mrs. P. P. Long, Messrs. A. S. Hawkins and H. B. Smith with Miss Martha Smith presiding on the piano. The following songs were sung The Old Rugged Cross, It Is Well With My Soul,’ and Nearer Still Nearer. The services at the grave-. were under the auspices of I. 0. R. M., Lodge No. 253, of Newman. and the burial ceremonies were very impressive. The members of the order had charge of the flowers, which were numerous and beautiful. The active pall-bearers were: Jay T. Burgett, Charles C. Burgett, T. P. Burgett, Ira E. Atto, Ray Allen and Clinton Boyer. Honorary pall-bearers were Scott Burgett, Luther Winkler, J. W. Boyer. J. W. Fansler, E. Jones and S. N. Albin. The following obituary was read at the services by Rev. Stoll: “Wilbur Sherman Hawkins, son of Samuel and Elizabeth Hawkins, was born in Newman Township, December 9, 1865, and died at his home on July 16, 1930, aged 64 years, 7 months and 7 days. Mr. Hawkin’s mother died when he was only eight months of age and was taken into the care of Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Hicks, who took care of him until he was six years old. At this time his father re- married and the boy was taken into his own home. Here on the farm he grew to manhood and on September 11, 1887, he was married to Miss Laura Haverstick. To this union five children were born: Mrs. Vina A. Ayers and Mrs. Maude May Long, of near Newman; Wilbur Samuel, at home; John Dewey, of near Camargo; and Allen, also at home. In March, Mr. and Mrs. hawkins moved to the farm which is now their home. Here in this same place they have lived of more than forty years, among their friends and neighbors. Mr. Hawkins was a lover of music and loved to sing the good old songs of faith and hope. Some of his happiest hours seemed to be
