Born in 1835, in Tuscaloosa Co. He married Mary Jane Sartin on August 24, 1856, in Tuscaloos a Co. His second wife was Nancy Sartin, the sister of his first wife. They married on Octobe r 31, 1872. Benjamin had six children by each wife. He joined Lumsdens Battery Light Artiller y in December of 1861 and was wounded in battle at Perryville, TN. He served until the surren der on May 4, 1865 near Mobile, AL and was paroled at Tuscaloosa. He died sometime after 191 0 and is buried at Salem Baptist Church Cemetery near Gordo, AL.
Brief history of "Lumsden's Battery", taken from a "Brief Historical Sketches of Military Org anizations Raised in Alabama During The Civil War" published by the Alabama State Departmen t of Archives and History in 1966. It was reproduced from Willis Brewer's "Alabama: Her Histo ry, Resources, War Record, and Public Men from 1540-1872."
The company was recruited at Tuscaloosa, and reported for duty at Mobile, November 1861, 12 5 strong. Statined at Fort Gaines till after Shiloh, the battery relieved Gage's at Tupelo, a nd were given six guns. The battery skirmished at Farmington, and in the Kentucky campaign fo ught at Perryville with small loss. At Chicamauga there were several casualties, and batter y lost a gun. Its pieces moved down the road from Dalton to Atlanta, and 5 killed and 25 woun ded was the number of its casualties. The battery's loss was small around Atlanta; but, havin g marched with the army into Tennessee, it was overwhelmed at Nashville, losing its guns, si x men killed, and 22 captured. Placed in Spanish Fort, the garrison was under fire for two w eeks, with some loss. Moving up to Marion Station, (Miss), the battery was surrendered with t he department.
