David and Margaret lived in St. Clair Township in the early years of their marriage and some of their children were baptized at the Old Log Lutheran and Reformed Church in Osterburg. In the 1840s, they moved into the area that was then
Greenfield Township of Bedford County, probably to present-day Juniata Township of Blair County where David's brother Conrad was living. They had one child baptized in the Newry Lutheran Church in the village of Newry, a church Conrad Hite
also attended. In 1850, David and Margaret moved to Iowa and settled in Canton Township of Benton County. David bought eighty acres of land soon after his arrival and eventually became one of the largest landowners in the area. He and
Margaret joined the Grand Prairie United Church of the Brethren. They had twelve children, all of whom were born in Pennsylvania except the youngest.
They were buried in Grand Prairie United Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Benton County
David and Margaret (Stephens) Hite, who came to Iowa and located in Benton Township of this county on May 4, 1850. David Hite bought 80 acres from the government, which he later sold, but remained a resident of Benton Township until his death,
when about 70 years of age.
David and Margaret (Stephens) Hite, who came to Benton County with a family of 11 children, one child being born later. Of these 12 children all are living save one, and the youngest is 60 years of age. The child that died was a son, Nicholas
Hite, a veteran of the Civil War, who passed away Aug. 25, 1908, at his home in Idaho. David Hite, who was born in 1800, died January 1, 1868; his widow died in 1894, in her eighty-seventh year. They reached Benton County May 4, 1850, at which
time there were but three houses at the present site of Vinton, then called Fremont. David Hite settled seven miles southeast of Vinton, two and one-half miles south of the Cedar (River), on the prairie, on the farm now owned by William Fry and
family, in section 6, Canton Twp. He became a successful general and stock farmer, coming here from the hills of PA, with practically no capital. He and his wife were earnest members of the United Brethren church, and many services of the
society were held at their log house. David was a stanch Republican, but never held political office. He was born in PA, but his father, a native of Germany, served through the American Revolution; his mother was a native of PA, and of German descent. David Hite and his wife had
children as follows: Samuel, for many years past an invalid, living at Lake Park, Iowa; Henry, of Dysart, Tama County, Iowa (*also married a Sanders); Mary, who married George Sanders, and lives in Greenfield, Iowa; Jacob, of Vinton; Nicholas,
mentioned above, a soldier in Company D, 28th Iowa Volunteers, now deceased; David, a wealthy farmer and stockman of central Nebraska; Rachel, who married John T. Danner, and lives at Vinton; Margaret, who married Benjamin Sanders, and lives in
Warren Co., IA; John W.; Catherine, who married Stephen Yerkes, and lives in Taylor Twp., Benton County; Ellen, who married Joseph Butterfield, of Vinton; and Jane, who married L. W. Latham, a merchant of Vinton.
Route to Iowa: over Cumberland Mountain to Ohio RIver and by boat down the Ohio and Mississippe Rv then by wagon to Benton Co, Canton twp.
Burials in the Prairie United Brethren Cemetery, Taylor Twp, Benton Co. , Iowa.
