Text: ID: I1736 Name: John LARRANCE Sex: M Birth: 29 SEP 1725 in ,Northumberland,VA Death: 28 OCT 1800 in Richland township,Randolph,NC (left will) Burial: Richland township,Randolph,NC (grave marked by a r
ock, engraved "John Larrance Note:
John Larrance (1725-1800) was the first of the Larrance/Lawrence family to come to what is now Randolph County (it was Orange Co. when he came, then became Guilford and finally Randolph in 1778). He w as born in Northumberland Co. VA and then about 1738 his parents moved the family to Prince William Co. (now Fauquier Co.) On 23 Jan 1750 in Prince William Co., Edward Larrance sold a negro girl Cate, aged 10, to Jno. Combs, and John Larrance (presumably this same John, and not his uncle by the same name) was a witness. (Deed book M 1749-1752, Liber 111, page 168) A number of families from the Fauquier area migrated to central NC, and it is assumed that John came between 1750 and 1755, settling on Fork Creek in the southeast corner of what is now Randolph Co. The 1755 Orange Co. tax list shows John Garner with John Laurence & a negro.
In February 1761, "Jno. Lawrence & Jno. Needham" surveyed 500 acres up Richland Creek for a Granville grant to John Gardner. In March 1761, "Jno. Lawrence & Jas. Letham" surveyed 225 acres on Fork Cre ek for a Granville grant to Enoch Spink (sic).
John must have married around 1762, but I have never found any document (proof) of his marriage, and I do not know where he was married. His wife was Ann Needham, and again, I have never found any pro of positive of her surname, though I do not doubt that it was Needham. I have done research on the Needham family, but have been unable to prove her parents, though she must be descended from the Needham family in Pasquotank Co. NC. She was likely a sister of John and Thomas Needham of Randolph Co., who both died around the same time as John Larrance. John Needham was probably the same one who surveyed land with John Larrance. There was also a William Needham living
