John's will listed his children and gsons - William H. Canter, Nathaiel Canter, and John W. Canter, gdau Babara Gaston, Catharine Canter, and Sarah Comer. (Will dated 18 Oct 1858) Bill of sale 14 July 1860 lists his gch - Hannah age 16, George age 14 and Johnathan age 12. Member of Hamilton Christian Church.

Came to OH. from Fredrick, VA. about 1800. Worked with cousins John and Thomas making black powder. John was one of the co-founders of Hamilton Twp. in southern Jackson Co.,OH.
Note from Genealogy of Canter Family
In 1823, John bought land in what would become Hamilton Twp in southern Jackson Co., Ohio. John was of the co-founders of it in 1825. There were 3 trustees and they were Samuel Gillilland, John Canter, and John Cantwell. The treasurer was John Walls, a relative of John's wife, Barbara Walls. Thomas Canter, John's father, died when John was 2 and his mother, Penelope, died when he was only about 7 years old. Now an orphan, he went to live with George Walls, who became his guardian. He ultimately married George Walls' daughter, Barbara.
Nov 26, 1798 John Canter receives from his former Guardian, George Wall, chattels and money bequethed to him by his mother, Penelope Canter. Prince Georges County, Maryland. Guardian Bonds, 1791-1803.
