Kinship to Author: 7th great-grandfatherBaptized June 1, 1673 in the First Church of New London.James Avery and his wife were members of the church at Grotonbefore the ordination on Nov. 22, 1727.He was a brander of horses for Groton. 1705: constable,1707-08; on list of freemen, 1708-11: justice for New LondonCourt, 1726-1735: guardian of the Pequot Indians after hisfather's death; commissioned ensign of the first company of theGroton train band, 1716: lieutenant, 1721; captain, 1728.In 1730 he was one of the committe to take care of the townguns. He was given lot no. 18 in the division of the commonlands. He received many gifts of land from his father. March15, 1717, James Avery, Sr., out of love for his son James andfor his "more comfortable subsistence and lively hood" madeover to him several parcels: 60 acres of land bought of SamuelChapman, 20 acres bought of the widow Hannah Bushnell, the saltmeadow bought of Joseph Latham deceased, another salt meadow oftwo acres, 100 acres bought of William Denison, nine acresbought of Samuel Raymond, three lots containing 77 acres moreor less, 30 acres also bought of Samuel Chapman. The witnesseswere John Avery and Samuel Avery.James Avery made his will March 28, 1749. He mentioned wife;sons James Avery, 2nd, John Avery, Jr., Ebenezer, Jr., anddaughter Hannah Hall. He divided his movable estate into fourparts, one for each child, Elihu and Prudence were dead. Hemade no mention of Mary. An undecipherable stone that standsbeside that of Prudence in the Avery-Morgan burying ground maymark the resting place of Mary. She was alive June 17, 1731,when Hannah, Mary and Prudence were admitted in full communionin the First Chruch of Groton.The first three children were baptized in the First Chruch ofNew London. The second was baptized "in the name of his wife"(May 26, 1700, James being under discipine for signing the"remonstrance." The other baptisms were probably recorded inthe lost book of the Groton Church.Both Mary and James Avery are buried in the Avery-Morgan buryingground near Poquonock Bridge in the town Groton.
