Notes
Individual:
Relationship to Author: GranduncleBorn on the farm northwest of Humboldt, NEChristened: Catholic in Auburn or Dawson, NEMy father was thirty-two years old when he married my mother. He often talked about taking the horse and buggy to go todances all over the southeastern corner of Nebraska. It wouldbe getting about sun up as he'd drive into the driveway andunhitch the horse from the buggy. Then to the barn tounharness and feed, just in time for breakfast and often for adays work in the fields. These were the times of closeness withfamily relatives and friends, and there were many gatherings.Herb was well known in Richardson County and surrounding areasfor his custom work. He bought his first thresher and steamengine in 1913 and started threshing. Customers increased eachyear. In 1919, Norton, Kansas area had a big wheat crop. There were no threshers so Herb shipped his outfit fromHumboldt to Norton by rail. The farmers flocked to town whenthe train pulled into Norton. The city of Norton furnishedwater for the steam engine. After a busy summer, Herb shippedhis outfit back to Humboldt.Through the depression years he kept busy threshing wheat andhauling clover and alfalfa for seed. After harvest, he wouldsaw lumber for people.About 1927, Herb started selling Meikle-Shepard threshers, laterbought out by Oliver. He then sold Oliver and Gleanermachinery.May 1946, the family moved to Greeley, Colorado area where theyowned and operated a motel. The fall of 1954 they moved toBoulder, Colorado and built an apartment house and a new home.Buried: 1 Mar 1974 Parkview (or Mt. View??) Memorial Garden inBoulder, COResource: notes from Eldona Wanrow Gossman
