Text: ID: I1736 Name: John LARRANCE Sex: M Birth: 29 SEP 1725 in ,Northumberland,VA Death: 28 OCT 1800 in Richland township,Randolph,NC (left will) Burial: Richland township,Randolph,NC (grav e marked by a rock, engraved "John Larrance Note:
John Larrance (1725-1800) was the first of the Larrance/Lawrence family to come to what is no w Randolph County (it was Orange Co. when he came, then became Guilford and finally Randolp h in 1778). He was born in Northumberland Co. VA and then about 1738 his parents moved the fa mily to Prince William Co. (now Fauquier Co.) On 23 Jan 1750 in Prince William Co., Edward La rrance sold a negro girl Cate, aged 10, to Jno. Combs, and John Larrance (presumably this sam e John, and not his uncle by the same name) was a witness. (Deed book M 1749-1752, Liber 111 , page 168) A number of families from the Fauquier area migrated to central NC, and it is ass umed that John came between 1750 and 1755, settling on Fork Creek in the southeast corner o f what is now Randolph Co. The 1755 Orange Co. tax list shows John Garner with John Laurenc e & a negro.
In February 1761, "Jno. Lawrence & Jno. Needham" surveyed 500 acres up Richland Creek fo r a Granville grant to John Gardner. In March 1761, "Jno. Lawrence & Jas. Letham" surveyed 22 5 acres on Fork Creek for a Granville grant to Enoch Spink (sic).
John must have married around 1762, but I have never found any document (proof) of his marri age, and I do not know where he was married. His wife was Ann Needham, and again, I have neve r found any proof positive of her surname, though I do not doubt that it was Needham. I hav e done research on the Needham family, but have been unable to prove her parents, though sh e must be descended from the Needham family in Pasquotank Co. NC. She was likely a sister o f John and Thomas Needham of Randolph Co., who both died around the same time as John Larranc e. John Needham was probably the same one who surveyed land with John Larrance. There was als o a William Needham living in Randolph Co. around the same time, but he disappears without fu rther record. It has been speculated that he could've been another brother of Ann, or maybe e ven her father. John and Ann named their first children Edward and Sarah, which were the name s of his parents, so it is not unreasonable to think that the second son was named for her fa ther. However, in doing research on the Needham family, by a process of elimination, it woul d appear that one Bailey Needham is the most likely candidate for Ann's father. As for Ann' s surname, it was mentioned in a journal kept by a grandson, Isaac Larrance, who came from I N to NC to visit after the Civil War. (I have not seen this journal myself though.)
In the Orange Co. NC Court minutes of August 1764 it was "ordered that Windsor Pierce, Jeffr ey Beck, Christopher Monday, John Needham, John Williamson, & John Needham - James Pittman, J ames Graves, Ralph Hinwold, & Charles Strange, Solomon Morgan & John Purslay, Peter Funcannon , and William Searcy, Henry Smith, Adam Andrews, John Garner, John Lawrence & Jno. RhodesâǦmee t and lay out a RoadâǦfrom Rowan line opposite Frazier's Road to the best & nearest Road leadi ng to Cross CreekâǦ" It was also "ordered that the following JuryâǦSamuel Cox, Thomas Cox, Elis ha Cadsal (?), Chirstopher Husay, Solomon Cox, John Cox Jr., William Wierman, Francis Chaney , Joseph Comber, John Hodgins, Robert Hodgins, Stephen Husay, Hercules Ogle & John Trammel, m eet and lay out a roadâǦfrom the south side of Deep River to Rowan line to Cross CreekâǦand ... and report...and John Lawrence to be Overseer from Richard (really Richland) Creek to Cumberl and line." (Abstracts of the Minutes of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions of Orange Co. N C Sept 1752 - Aug 1766, compiled by Ruth Herndon Shields) (Note: Cape Fear Road, also calle d Salem-Cross Creek Road, ran from present Winston-Salem to Fayetteville. Cross Creek is th e current day Fayetteville. The road crossed the Rowan line just south of Franklinville, runn ing south parallel with Deep River some distance to the west and then crossed the then Cumber land line on what is now the Moore/Randolph Co. line.)In March of 1771, Richard Tullos mad e his will in Cumberland County. He lived in that section which became Moore Co. and was by t he Randolph Co. line. He named his executors: his son John Tullos, and John Lawrence. I thin k this must be the same John Larrance, and the Larrance and Tullos families did have numerou s dealings with each other in Fauquier Co. VA, but this is the only instance I have found th e two families together in NC. This begs the question as to how much, if any, contact did Joh n have with the family he left behind in Virginia. It appears that he did indeed maintain con tact; when his father died in 1786, John's son Edward was up in Virginia, and apparently ha d been for some time, since he married a girl up there.
In 1772 Enoch Spinks Sr. made a will and two of the witnesses were John Needham & John Lawre nce, all of Guilford Co. NC. The Spinks family had also come from the Prince William/Fauquie r Co. area of Virginia. Enoch Spinks Sr. married Amy Pearce. (Their son was Rev. Enoch Spink s who married Elizabeth Needham.) (Adventures of Our Ancestors by Elma Jessie Croom Hooker. P rivately published 1989 p93)
North Carolina Revolutionary War Army Accounts, Vol. 5, (Old Series, L Book - Roster Rev. So ldiers from NC, page 212) records two John Lawrences, #2000 & #2075, from Salisbury District . Several descendants have gone into the DAR using service by John Lawrence (I think the #207 5). I remain unconvinced that either of these Johns was ours. Our John Larrance lived in Rand olph Co., which was in Hillsborough District, and any service by him should have been in tha t district. In Salisbury district there was a John Lowrance (Lawrence), who bought land in Ro wan Co. in 1759, and whose descendants mostly use the spelling Lowrance.
In 1792, our John Larrance received from the state of North Carolina, three land grants Foun d in Randolph Co. deed book 5, pages 102-104, the deeds were for 54, 640 and 260 acres respec tively. For those who might speculate that these grants were for military service, this is wh at Eldon Cox (a descendant) wrote me: "At the beginning of the Revolution, the State of NC co nfiscated all crown land, proprietary land, etc. that had not been sold. In Randolph Co. thi s included the Granville land and Henry Eustace McCulloch land. After the end of the Revoluti on this land was sold. Therefore these grants were by purchase. The state of NC did not giv e land warrants for militia service but did so for Continental Line service. However, none o f these grants were for land in the present borders of NC. All were for land that is now in t he state of Tennessee. The name of our John Lawrence does not appear on that list."On 22 Oc t 1798, John purchased some one hundred acres on Fork Creek from William Bland. (Edward Larra nce & James Gallask witnessed the deed.) On 14 Nov 1799, John purchased an additional 150 acr es on Fork Creek, also from William Bland (William and Edward Larrance witnessed the deed).
John made his will 27 September 1800 in Randolph Co., naming his wife Ann, and 10 children ( one son, John, had died at age 12): Nancy, Sally (nickname for Sarah), Patty (nickname for Ma rtha), Needham, Jonathan, Jesse, Edward, William, Richard, and Peter. Needham and Jonathan re ceived the bulk of the lands John had bought from William Bland. Jesse was to receive the lan d on which John lived.
In the estate record for John (NC Archives, Randolph Co. Estates CR.081.508.88) is the follo wing, which seems to indicate there was some disagreement about settling the estate: "Ordere d that a citation issue to Richard Laurence, Peter Laurence, Jonathan Laurence, Enoch Spink s Special Guardian for Nancy Laurence and Jesse Laurence now minors - Nathaniel Tucker Husban d of Patsey daughter of John Laurence Deceased-and Ann Laurence Widow & Relict of said John D eceased, to appear at the next Court to be held for the County of Randolph on the first Monda y of May next, to shew cause, if any they have, why the will of John Laurence Deceased, whic h has been admitted to Probate in this Court, should not be set aside, and Administration gra nted on the estate of the said Deceased. Ordered also that the Clerk issue Subpoena for eac h party-- Subpoena for pltff."
John is buried in a family cemetery on the land he owned. There is a literal rock marking hi s grave, and the rock reads JOHN LARRANCE (wraps around the back of the stone).
Son Richard left for Tennessee about 1809. William left for Indiana during the next decade , and around 1815, Edward, Jonathan and Nancy left for Alabama. Needham left around the sam e time, possibly just moving one county over, to Chatham. Around 1836 Peter left for Indiana.
Sarah was living in 1800, and was presumably married, but as her spouse is unknown, no mor e is known about her. Only Martha and Jesse remained in Randolph Co., but a son of Edward, na mely Thomas Lawrence, also remained. Another unrelated Lawrence family resided briefly in Ran dolph Co. in the 19th century, but essentially, until recent times, all those with the Lawren ce surname in Randolph descended from Jesse or Thomas.See WorldConnect:HADDOCK HAYDOCK CAR MICHAEL GALT SEWELL MCKIBBEN 51397 total entries, last updated Fri Apr 7 2000 Thomas C Haydoc k (Mike) http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?o p=GET&db=mikehaydock&id=I23921790 Hillsborough District,(Randolph co.)
