Individual:
William Turner Thorn served as a Lieutenant in the Confederate army in McGowan's Brigade (formerly Gregg's Brigade) in the Thirteenth Regiment. He was wounded at Second Manassas.Letter from Colonel A.C. Haskell, 27 September, 1901:Dear Miss Thorn:
I received your letter of the 21st and I assure you it is a pleasure to me to pay tribute to your noble father, though I feel that words can in no sense convey an adequate idea of his noble character and faithful service.
He was a lieutenant Co. D. in the nth S.C. Cavalry, which I had the honor to command the last years of the war.
The regiment was of fine material and he was in a group of noble fellows where a man had to show a rare ability to win the rank that he had among them. He was a superb soldier in every sense of the word. He was loved and honored by his associates, his comrades and his commander. The following was written of him: 'He was a patriot, a gentleman and a superb type of the Confederate soldier
Sincerely and truly yours,
A.C. Haskell, Col 7 S.C. Cavalry"
