Individual:
Stephen Lindsley first appears on the Morris County, New Jersey, tax roles in July, 1785. He had reached the age of twenty-one. At this time he owned thirty-three acres of improved land and an additional twenty-nine acres of unimproved property. These were the lands that he had inherited after his father's death. By 1768 he had cleared most of the unimproved acreage, had sold off about twelve acres of the unimproved lands, and had increased his arable holdings to fifty acres. By August of 1794 he had sold three acres of his farmland, and by September of 1803 had reduced his holdings to thirty-five acres. He gave up active farming about 1808 and sold the last of his real property, retiring to the village of Morristown.
