Text: Searched for birth certificate in 1869 in Newton, Kansas : records date back only to 1875
Personal notes of Barbara Bartlett :
Newton, Kansas
Kansas City, Kansas
Larned, Kansas
Baltimore, MD
[Denver, CO]
Wrote for Baltimore Sun (?)
1880 census : searched Iowa, Kansas, MD ; no listing as head of household
1890 federal census was destroyed
Baltimore News obituary : moved from Kansas City to Baltimore
Obituary : Moved from Baltimore to Denver because of his health 6 years before death (1899ish). Had been employed as a reporter and special writer on the Baltimore News for some years
1900 census :
Vol. 19 ED 217 sheet 16 line 88
Born Feb. 1831 (?) in Iowa - my guess : info says born 1831, age 69; probably just reversed, born 1869, age 31
Parents both born in Iowa (low confidence of accuracy)
Present address : Northwest St. Baltimore (renting)
Married for 6 years
Occupation : "Reporter (N.P.)" [I assume NewsPaper]
Others at same address : Mattie (wife), Allen (son), Annie Kerr (mother-in-law), Hannah Nicoll (aunt)
Obituary : he was first employed on the old Times, later going to the Post, where he worked until his health failed entirely, nearly two years ago. Since then, he has worked intermittently on the Republican and the Times. He leaves a wife and two small children.
The obituary in the Baltimore News explains that "he was on the staff of the Denver Times until it went into the hands of receivers and was transferred to Senator Patterson as an evening edition of the Rocky Mountain News. Then he joined the Post staff, and until a year ago worked at his desk in spite of his enfeebled condition ... he handled the celebrated jury-bribery case against Tanimen and Bonfils, following a murderous assault upon these two proprietors of the Denver Post ... it is a pity he has left behind him no permanent writings."
In 1996, Baltimore Sun phone # is (410) 332-6000; archives are x6800, $75/hour, min $37.50

I emailed Yvonne Keast [keastx6@hotmail.com] with some Larned questions. She passed it on to her "ex-sister-in-law" Terry Bauer, she's the County Appraiser. She wrote : "It took a lot of time to find the old Broadway Addn. I didn't even know we had ever had one, but I did find it and I estimated where the land is now. It is a farmed parcel on the north side of Larned (out of the city limits now). The owners of record are John and Mark Fleming. Their mailing address (I think John's) is 359 Franklin Ave, Loveland,CO,80537-5330 if you would like to contact them.
The ownership information I could find was very interesting and I don't know which owner was your great-grandfather. The addition was established in May of 1887 by Mary and William Scott and WR and Jennie Adams. The addition was vacated in 1901. At first all the maps I could find were in 1886 and 1902, which was all around years I needed. I finally found a plat book that showed the former addition. I do not have a scanner on my PC or I would send you a copy of the plat (I would be glad to mail you a copy if you would like to send me your mailing address). The ownership from the addition before the vacation goes as follows: WR Adams and wife to WM Rhea (deed book V page 5)---Mary E Scott and husband to Ledru Silvey (deed book V page 116---Pawnee County Tax Deed to Enda Spaulding Rush (book 13 page 340, I looked at this deed it is dated 9/7/1900)--- the next record is the vacation (M/D 436). The lot was 50X 142."
"The phone number of the Appraisers' Office here is 316-285-2915."
Barbara (Phillips) Ellis recommended I call Harlton "Ske" (pronounced Ski) Skelton for Larned information [316-285-6594]. He recommended Marcella Spreier [316-285-2853]. She has the index to Zook cemetery (for the Pratts) and also an 1890 school census. I can call her Thursday when we get there. She also recommended Beth Schrader [316-285-6154] as a school expert. She lives in Larned on East 18th. Beth has tracked down the country schoolhouses before, but it takes some time. I emailed her [earschraeder1@kans.com] Delno's information 6-27-00. She has cemetery listings from all over Pawnee and Barton counties.
Harlan also said Mrs. Herbert Bowman is the director of the Zook cemetery, and undoubtedly has the directory.
Marcella said the Pratt cemetery is the Zook cemetery, but you look it up under "Pleasant Valley."
----------------- Teaching
1890 school listing says district #2 = "Jayhawk" in Larned
1918 District #49 = "Monger" in Pleasant Ridge
2/14/1890 After dinner walked out in the country to my old school in district 49
8/28/1890 Accepted teaching job in district #2; 7 months at $45/month
9/5/1890 Went out in the country to district 49 where I used to teach
10/6/1890 First day of school : District #2, 6 miles NE of Larned
Beth Schrader sent me "Outline Map of Pawnee County Kansas 1902" which shows the locations of school houses, and also some notes. Jayhawk (#2) is in the SE 1/4 of section 3 in T21S;R16W. Monger (#49) is in the SE 1/4 of section 11 in T22S;R17W.
