Individual:
RALEIGH -- John Lansing Cameron, 80, of 39 Springmoor Court, died
Thursday, February 20, 1997 at Rex Hospital due to complications afterlung surgery.
A native of Lee County, he was the son of the late William John Cameron and Lenna Rosser Cameron.
In addition to his wife of 56 years, Beulah Bradley Cameron, he is survived by two sons and one daughter plus their spouses, John and NancyCameron of Falls Church, Va., David and Martha Cameron of Union Mills,and Ann and Irvin Pearce of Raleigh. Surviving also are his brothers,Phil Cameron of Jacksonville, Fla., and Dan Cameron of Lenoir; plus fivegrandsons, Will Cameron, Chad Cameron, Lans Cameron, Jason Pearce andCameron Pearce.
Upon receiving his education at Elon College and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Dr. Cameron served the state of North Carolinaas director of the Division of School Planning before moving to theFederal Government where his career culminated in the Department ofCommerce as director of Public Telecommunications.
He also was a veteran of World War II, being discharged from the U.S. Navywith the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Prior to that, he was on thefaculty of Louisburg College, as an instructor and as the athleticdirector.
He was an honorary member of the American Institute of Architects and a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Council ofEducational Facility Planners. Some of his other professionalassociations were with the American Association of School Administrators,the Council of Education Facility Planners, and the Association ofEducational Communications and Technology.
He was a longtime member of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church, having served as Chair of the Building Committee for the current Sanctuary andthe moving of the Chapel. He also served in many other leadershippositions within the church, and was honored to have a Sunday schoolclass named in his honor: the Cameron Class.
Some of the civic organizations in which Dr. Cameron provided leadership during his retirement years were: the Residents Association of SpringmoorLife Care Community, the Senior Democrats Club, and the Wake County Men'sGarden Club.
The Memorial service willbe at 3 p.m. at Hayes Barton United Methodist Church on Sunday, February 23. The family will have visitation from 7-9p.m. in the church parlor on Saturday, February 22. Memorial donationsmaybe made to the Elevator Fund of Hayes Barton United Methodist Church,2209 Fairview, Road, Raleigh, N.C. 27608.
