Individual:
I have heard from my Broadway cousin about the mysterious "S": From a
book written in the early sixties - "The Camerons of Harnett andCumberland Counties" the story is told how young lads of Scotland, inorder to escape the poverty of their home land, would enlist in theKing's guard, and serve for 12 years. Thenthey could apply for a landgrant in the colonies - for 1,000 acres. The English troops called theScottish boys "Scott", and one fellow whose name was Daniel wasdischarged with his land grant, signed Daniel Scott Cameron. He andallhis relatives came to Carolina, landing in Wilmington. Daniel Scottwas exposed to smallpox and died after just three days. Many relativesfelt they shouldhonor their benefactor, so there came to be many babiesnamed Daniel Scott. Whether John Lansing Cameron's grandfather was oneof those inheritants is anybody's guess. But I like to believe that hewas. John Lansing Cameron (a.k.a. Popsi) was proud of being a Scotsman, and had he heard this story, I'm sure he would have claimed kin to theoriginal D. Scott Cameron.
